Large estate, 7-9k?
Discussion
Just been to see the old man, who is finally admitting it's time for his £300 2000 Mondeo estate to go. 4 years for £300 is not bad, but it's starting to become embarassing. Anyway,i digress.
Dad isn't really a "keen" driver any more (he drives buses for a living now). He does a lot of fishing and is up to the West of Scotland a few times a year, and likes the practicality of a wagon. He's just taken a lump of private pension so he's looking to get himself into something nice. Had enough of shedding, I think.
Criteria is fairly broad, big estate, not bothered about petrol or diesel but I think diesel is better suited to how he uses the car. Manual or auto considered but leaning to automatic.
Nothing too "flash" as he put it. Looking at 11 plates and onwards, 60-70k miles and under.
All I'm coming up with is a P3 Volvo V70. He's expressed interest in a 2014 Mondeo TitX but it's a bit salty for my liking at £9.5k with 67k. His wife reckons if he's spending that much money he should be getting something a little more the a Mondeo, and I agree.
Suggestions welcome

Your budget should get you into a 2.2D XF sportbrake? Might be a bit leggy on mileage compared to your criteria but can’t recall any major issues on the 2.2 Diesels. For example:

I briefly thought about the XF too. If it was my cash I'd be right in there. If it was my cash I wouldn't want an estate, though.
I think the old man is still firmly in the camp of "100k is knackered". Irony is, he hasn't owned a car on less miles for about a decade. I pointed him to my X-Type, which is still as tight as a drum on 138k but I'm not sure he's having it.
I'll mention it though!

Saab 9-3? You’ll get low mileage for your money

Some good suggestions here, thanks guys! Any further input welcome. Some cars I hadn't considered, not my usual market area!
Saab might be a nice oddball choice, also for the Skoda. Definitely meeting the criteria for "nice, but not too flash".
I'd have one, but too old, thirsty, expensive to run and "flash" for my dad. He's of fairly simple tastes. Hes looking for something more sedate. I can't recall a time in recent history his Mondeo has exceeded 60mph. Any RS Audi would be wasted on the old get

Personally, I think Volvo's diesel game was a bit late to the party and their engines of that vintage seem underpowered, inefficient and over taxed on emissions.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201905087724524?atmobcid=soc3
For £6k though and for someone used to driving a bus it's a good shout.

Saab would be a great choice: super comfortable seats!
Check if there is an Indy specialist nearby just in case, but I had 3 for over 300k miles, loved them!
Don’t rule out the Mundano....Ford’s drive well and are cheap to maintain!
I don't need convincing on a Saab- I had a 9-5 2.3t before I bought the Jag. Brilliant car. I also agree 're Mondeo, but I think he'd have to be a lunatic to spend as much as £9k on a one. I wouldn't spend more than 5 on any used Mondeo.Check if there is an Indy specialist nearby just in case, but I had 3 for over 300k miles, loved them!
