Finding deceased parents' building society accounts help
Discussion
Is there a way of finding where deceased relatives current financial accounts are held? In my case it's my Father who died recently. My Mother died 9 years earlier and they used to have joint accounts then.
I know that my father had some 5 year fixed rate ISAs, maturing at different times. Since you need your National Insurance Number to operate ISA's could an executor find out that way. My Father has instructed solicitors to be the executors of his estate, but they have only taken the financial details I could provide. I think there are more accounts - building societies and other investments.
Would a credit check company like Experian find out other sources of deposits? or is there another type of company that does this?

All Building Societies will issue at least an annual letter, advising interest or rates. There should be paperwork amongst his belongings.
There should be, and there's loads of paperwork to go through. There are mentions of different building societies with 5 year fixed interest ISAs with different maturity dates...some already matured. I don't know if that money was then invested elsewhere or moved to a lower interest account. With online banking and paperless statements it's not that easy to keep track of what's been happenning. I would expect that my Father maximised his ISA allowance each year and up to 2010 my Mother would have done to. Is there a way I could work out what that total investment would have been if they'd both maximised their ISA allowances and also Tessa's and whatever came before/after that.
I had this challenge last year when my father went my mother is still alive
I went through everything especially focussed on bank accounts for regular payments in or out
I found two annuities that my mother benefiited because she got 50% of it
As well if found a Leeds building society paying book with a amount payed in so I sent it to them with a copy LPA sadley the money had been taken out .
by my parents .
It takes a bit of detective work as well

Thanks - I did see that site when I googled for info. I will need to persuade the solicitors to use this website as they are the executors. I was hoping to find out alternative ways so I would know the answer and could then tell the solicitors. There is a lot to be said for you going through the papers diligently. Leave no stone unturned, don't discard anything unless it's clearly not of interest, even a scrappy bit of paper with a seemingly random set of numbers written on it can lead to a 'forgotten' account. I know this from personal experience, an account number written on the flap of an old envelope led to an old account which had been closed, but which then led onto previously unknown accounts where details had been lost after funds transferred into them.
Just relying on a solicitor to do it, may result in it not being done diligently, and if done will cost. Unfortunately the analogue method suggested can be very consuming of time and emotions.
All our stuff is listed and filed clearly so that side won't be a mystery.
