Music Catalogue Software
Discussion
Do you just want a catalogue of your CDs, or do you want them compressed on your harddisk?
For ripping them onto the disk, I recommend CDex. http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/
It is free and open source, and it has been downloaded nearly 90000 times. It will ask for all the song and album names once it starts ripping. It contacts http://freedb.org which is a massive database of existing CDs. That service is free too; you just need an internet connection.

I want a combination of both options! I have hundreds of CD's that are taking up far too much space. I don't want to take the time, or the space on my harddrive, to copy each one. I'm not planning to ditch the CD's as I use them in the car, instead I am taking them out of their cases and storing them in those purposed made multi pocket folder thingy's. As a result I want to be able to search a database that will tell me the folder or file reference location of the music, whether it is an MP3 or still on a CD.
Is this a tall order? Should I just bite the bullet and dump them all onto my PC?

you could make a very simple Access DB that would do the trick for you very quickly.
edit:: however, whats the point? Surely if you have the MP3's neatly ordered in a folder you can just skim through the folder and if the artist/album isn't there, it's still on CD? The only draw back is it requires you to know which albums you actually have in the first place...

Okay here is the scenario, I have just short of 1000 cd's, none of which are on my harddrive. I have another 250ish albums on my PC. In an ideal world I would like to be able to have a searchable index that would tell me if a song/artist or album was in my collection. I appreciate that an access database would be easy to create, but it would rely upon me keying all the data - which will take me months. Instead I want to be able to shove the CD in the drive and the softward lift the details from it, thus creating the record. Same deal for the Mp3's, scan the folders and create it from that.
I think I've found some software that may well offer the solution.

Can't be done. The album details are not on an audio CD. That's what CDDB (aka Gracenote) is for. Programs create a hash key from the CD using track numbers, lengths, etc., and query a database as to what the CD might be. If it can't find it, then you get to key the details in for someone else to use. I've never had it fail to find anything yet, and I have some seriously obscire CDs.
Bite the bullet and rip them to MP3. CDex will query CDDB for you and name all the files/folders appropriately. I did my (many hundreds of) CD collection ina couple of weeks, doing a few each evening while reading email.
Once you've got them to MP3s, zillions of options open up to you. You certainly won't want to lug CDs round with you any more. And if you don't want to buy an iPod, get a second-hand Archos Jukebox from eBay...

Put them all on your hard drive. If you need the space you can get a 150GB+ hard drive for £50.
I use WinAmp for ripping and playback (it uses CDDB for lookup), and have all CDs on disk. The physical CDs go in the car.
If you want to do some hybrid database you're going to have to write at least some of your own software to handle it...

Sigh, there I am revising Quality Management Systems, contracts et al and I suddenly remember something that would help you out. Shows how much I'm enjoying revision. Still, 24hours exactly till it's all over and then I'm unemployed!
www.quickdigital.co.uk/ will convert your CD's for 75p each (min 50 orders) + 2x P&P. So your 500CD's would be £375 + a hefty P&P charge. However, it's an option if you want to avoid doing it yourself.

I have just Ripped my entire CD collection and Also ISO'd all My DVD, movies to PC H/D, I now server it up using Windows Media Center edition, Can browse it from my workstation using Terminal Session and also via Windows Media Center Extenders.
If you rip a DVD and then use software to extract the movie only, its supprising how a 8GB movie suddenly becomes 3GB

Pebbledash,
What are you using to rip the movies, or are you just DeCSSing them and leaving the Vob files?
I need something to help me do the AVI/WMV thing to the kids DVDs as they are all getting scratched, and I need archival backups
DVD decryptor to rip the DVD's to ISOs. And then DVD Shrink i think it is to Re-Edit the ISO and remove Everything but the movie (plays like a tape then). or you can just leave the ISO as is.
I use the My Movies plugin for WMCE and D-Tools to mount the ISO as required.
Now have one hell of a home entertainment juke box.
Also use the MAME pluging to run Arcade games when I want to.
Took me a fair bit of fiddling to finaly get it the way i wanted, but once done the results are good.

Getting very off topic (sorry) what hardware spec is the pc? I'm thinking about doing this (especially as the new xbox can slave off it).
