Many people (myself included) have bought via Chrono24.
They will hold your payment in ESCROW until you have received the watch and are happy for the funds to be released to the seller.
This adds a degree of protection, but you should do your due diligence and as much research on the watch/seller as you can.

I would echo this. Chrono24 is NOT who you are buying from, they are just a marketplace where dealers / individuals can place ads for their watches. They offer a degree of protection (the ESCROW function as mentioned, feedback etc) but it is up to you to do the due diligence on the seller. They will hold your payment in ESCROW until you have received the watch and are happy for the funds to be released to the seller.

Many of the dealers have bricks and mortar shops that you could visit, so they are less likely (but not impossible) to rip you off. Search the internet for dealer reviews / feedback outside of C24
I have bought several watches from C24 sellers and up to now have never had a problem (I returned one watch as it was doa, got an instant refund, with no acrimony at all from seller)
