Someone just forwarded a video to me via messenger (i can't seem to get the URL so i cant share it) of an extended family (i assume) getting out of a small car. There were 11 adults and children on the seats and three in the boot.

My first thought (after how uncomfortable they must have been) was about what would the situation if the worst happened and the car was involved In a serious crash?

Imagine how bad you would feel if you killed/injured 14 people , and what a big news story it would be compared to if you hit a car with two people in it.

What about insurance? Would the driver of the over loaded car be insured? If the accident was your fault would your insurance be forced to pay all the bills and compensation even though the car was overloaded etc etc?

i assume it was just a local journey on back streets as they would probably get noticed on main roads, but still!

Did any of the adults have really big shoes, loud trousers, weird makeup and large flowers in their lapels and one holding a bucket...…….?

The number of people in the vehicle has no effect on the insurance. Section 148 of the RTA gives a list of factors which can't be used to avoid insurance cover one of them is:-

- the number of persons that the vehicle carries.

Nope, not fake! probably half were children/smaller adults. only a couple of 'full size ' men.

Ah, I can get the link on my PC but not on my Ipad.

Surely it should be the opposite, as at least they are insured.

yeah i guess i was just thinking that it might just not be very safe, and not a practice that should be encouraged..but I probably wont lose sleep over it.

Are passengers allowed in the 'boot' of an estate?

Certainly wouldn't have seatbelts for them in the boot never mind several of the rest of the passengers.

No, they are not allowed in the boot. Also, you are not allowed to do 71mph on the motorway. But neither offence will have an effect on insurance coverage.

I can understand why third-party cover would pay to hold others harmless (and then possibly sue the owner/driver for the amount as it was not legal to carry that many people)
But are people saying it has no impact on your comprehensive insurance cover or just on third-party cover? I am not convinced that doing more than the speed limit has no impact on a fully comp policy.

Maybe, but it would certainly have a negative impact (contributory negligence) on any pi claim via motor insurance.

The number of people a vehicle carries
Not the number of people carried in the vehicle
So it will only allowed the ammount of people the car is designed/approved for
In this case I'd almost certainly say they would have something to say especially in regards to any personal injury claims submitted
