Following on from my post in the commuting thread where I narrowly avoided a circular saw bouncing out the back of a builders van this morning, what have you hit or avoided?

It reminded me of an incident a few years ago where I was riding up the A1 at the M25 junction one very quite Sunday morning when I spotted a horse running down the fast lane towards me, it took a while for my brain to compute, I then slow motion thought S**t, and managed to pull up into the hard shoulder as it galloped past. Luckily no other traffic.

North circular road, north-bound, past Finchley: come over the brow of the hill (after the tunnel) and there was a ladder in my lane. Avoid that, thre's another ladder. Avoid that, thre's a third ladder. Avoid that. This was probably in...I want to say...2012?

Pull over, call police, thank my lucky stars.

Ive hit the remains of a pallet and a pile of wood in the past, managed to avoid a bag of cement in recent years...best one(s) avoided was a car and its passengers that without warning stopped on a completely clear motorway, in the middle lane of the M1 near Watford and 5 or 6 people ran out from it in all directions...

About 200 meters from returning home one evening and a black bird was sitting in the road, eating some road kill. I slowed and revved, thinking it would fly away.... It flew straight at my face, luckily many years as a trained Ninja, I extended my left hand out and punched it. It hit me a lot harder than I expected, if I hadn't protected my face, I'm fairly sure it would have smashed my face shield and done some damage.

It reminded me of the biker a few years ago, killed on the A22 when a bird hit him in the helmet, knocked him out and off his bike cry

Ran over the plastic rear mudguard from a HGV, doing 50mph on the A406. It wasn't the flat plastic that hangs down behind the wheel, the big semi-circular bit that runs over the top of the wheel. God knows how I stayed on. Pulled up next to the owner in the next layby, who was trying to work out where it had gone. That was fun. Sheer luck no damage to me or bike.

A few years ago I was heading south on the A26 early morning and this came at me, couldn’t avoid it and it sent me right up out of my seat, managed to stay on the bike though but the front wheel suffered big time. Still never really worked out what it was, any ideas?

I went over a spacehopper once....

It was bouncing around the road, I expected it to go flying when I hit it.

It didn't.... Went under the car, lifting the front, then the rear wheels off the ground as I rolled over it.

They're strong as fk.

Can was a MK1 focus, so not majorly heavy, but still, you'd think it'd pop!

Ps - didn't realise this was in BB.... Soz like.

Not on a bike but in a car - coming past the services on the M6 near Stoke, just at an underpass, there's a whole wheel + hub from a lorry sitting in the outside lane... That was a clench moment thinking what kind of damage it'd do if you couldn't avoid it.

Following a manically driven curtain side van (those things beloved by Eastern Europe) around a twisty road in Slovakia - he was racing us in a good natured way.

Then his quad fell out the back to which he pulled an emergency stop from 90mph. 5 bikes avoiding a locked up van and cartwheeling quad will stay in my memory quite a while. yikes

India on a scooter - I’ve also hit a cow (they have attitude problems there) and been attacked by a reared up cobra.

I think the most frightening one was huge sheet of wood, probably that plastic covered chipboard popular in furniture. Both nearside wheels on it as I braked. Cue skidding and wiggling all over the place. Swerved into second lane with mercifully no traffic. Not what I expected coming around a bend on a motorway!

I also drove along a dirt road once accompanied by a pheasant going the same speed as me. All 3 of us in the car admiring the bird quite merrily until it turned sharply across the front of my car for no reason, rolled over the bonnet and into the long grasses on the other side. It got up, shook itself off and ran back up the road.

An inflatable seat from an inflatable boat/dingy. Thankfully avoided it and kicked it (in hindsight -> very stupid) off the road at 60mph.

I've had two memorable ones over the years:

Pigeon to the face at 50mph, neck was sore for weeks after.

M40 early morning, see something shimmer ontop of a scaffolding lorry, a few seconds later a chunky scaffold clamp bounces and takes a chunk out of my boot.

Pigeon seem to be quite popular already.

I was riding along about doing about 70, saw this pigeon up ahead sitting on my side of the road so pulled out to avoid it, as i got closer the thing decided to take off, it wasn't the quickest take off and this left it right in front of my face when i got there, couldn't move out of the way quick enough as it all happed so quickly, couldn't have hit my face any squarer on! Didn't hurt at the time but had a cracking headache that evening.

I got hit by a set of ladders that fell off the roof of a van just as I was overtaking it.

One section caught round my left leg destroying a bizarre little tendon in my ankle and displacing one side of my pelvis.

The driver of the van turned out to be someone I had worked with in the fire brigade who was now retired and doing a window cleaning round.
He had put the ladders on top of his van and then been distracted by his mobile so he got in and drove away without tying them down.

F****** idiot!

A mate claims to have fallen off when he was distracted while cornering by an enormous dildo lying in the verge.
When challenged on the veracity of his claims he was unable to produce said dildo.
