Cayenne 4.2 Diesel

Gents,

Looking to replace my Infinity FX 3.0d with a Cayenne V8 diesel. On paper the mpg actually looks better on the Porker. I do 100 miles a day and average 30mpg in the 3.0d. (The infiniti does has amazing spec tho in Premium S guise, radar CC, heated/cooling seats, 360 cameras etc all standard)

A few questions if you may...ive read about engines changing to the use of Adblu. What are the pros and cons? When did this happen and how to identify?

Is there a way to tell visually the updated PCM that came out for MY 2017.

Theres alot of choice out there and hence confusing. Anyone spotted a well spec'd bargain/good deal?

I have a Cayenne SD Platinum Edition 17 plate and have loved it. Effortless power, smooth and a dream to drive.

I am pretty sure adblue was on all 958.2 so post 2015...

You can tell the upgraded PCM as there is no surround to the screen.

I can obtain 40mpg on a decent run too but my commute to work 90% motorway generally achieves 31/32.

I am actually looking at moving it on soon as tend to keep cars for 18 months or so...it is heavily specced....360 camera, Burmester, sports design kit, pano roof, 21” sports classic designs and so on!

What is your budget?

Ad Blu means it is Euro 6 compliant which is a big positive...negative is that the exhaust note is slightly muted. Yes some people do care about that on a Deisel 4x4. Easiest way to check is look under the boot floor for the tank.

Great cars....we’ve done 40k miles in ours in two years. Not buying a new Cayenne because there is no diesel.

Mine is a 958.2 MY15 but registered late 14 and it doesn't have Adblu. It is Euro 5. It achieves near 40mpg on a run, mid/low 30s on shorter trips. I've heard the Adblu version sounds muted in comparison but haven't had first hand experience of both. When I was looking the specs vary a lot so decide what you want/don't want and go from there. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Have had 3 x 4.2ds, done just over 80k Miles in them. For me its the best engine for the car. So much power and torque. Great MPGs also for a car this size. The add blue usage will depend on how the car is driven. My last one needed filling up 2 times in 30k Miles.

Loving my 16 plate Adblue car. It’s sounds nice, does similar mpg to other respondents and topping adblue isnt a chore but get a VW bottle (then keep topping it up from 20lt can) for ease of filling.
I haven't got air suspension but know from previous car its v good but v expensive when it goes wrong.

Another happy 4.2 owner here

Mine is a pre Ad Blue model

Once you overcome the initial inertia (its a heavy beast), performance is magnificent. Devours motorways and you really have to keep a careful eye on the speedo or you are into license losing territory.

I am getting 25mpg in town, 40mpg on motorway when nursing it.

Interior is great, some people don't like the button fest but I prefer buttons to touch screens the new model

Advantage of the ad blue model is not being caught by the regulations / ULEZ

Plenty of space inside, good luggage space

Basically a go anywhere / do anything car

Great cars. I'm on my second - first one was a 3.0d which I had for nearly 5 yrs and recently traded up for the 4.2d. MPG on the 4.2 is averaging around 28-29 whereas the 3.0 was 36-37 so the 4.2 is approx 20% heavier on fuel. Performance on the 4.2 is more than 20% up on 3.0 so happy to pay a bit more in the wallet for the extra pace. Only thing I find with Cayenne's is you need a LOT of spec to make them a complete package. My current 4.2 lists at just under £100k, luckily I paid half that at 2.5 yrs old. I can't really find anything to replace it with... maybe a BMW M5 or Audi RS6 (I like my V8s) but both totally different type of car. As for sound - pre adblue sounds much better. Mine is adblue and only thing I can fault it for frown

Sorry I was recalling the MPG on the 3.0d that I had before the 4.2sds came out with regard to MPG amounts. the 3.0d would do well over 850 Miles on one tank if driven with care, late 30 Mpgs on run was the norm. With the 4.2d this was not the case. This below was taken at 27k miles, April 16 add Blue car. I did very little miles of the 6k, it was done by careful drivers over a good mix of roads. So imv its fair reflection of what to expect MPG wise.

That must be a lot of urban driving as mine with a mix of urban and motorway always achieves 30mpg over a tank

You need to reset your trip. I always wondered why mine seemed to stick on 6213 miles - apparently the trip only goes to 10000 km (6213 miles) then it stops recording mileage (and possibly mpg?).

Anyway, last reset I did (when it reached 6213) was 28mpg. So far I’m averaging 29.7. Mixture of town and A road driving. My driving is more spirited than Miss Daisy so the above 24.8mpg you must be either forgetting to turn your engine off at night or you are driving it very hard 99% of the time.

I'm just about to sell ^^^mine in a week or so when new vehicle arrives.. Has anyone advertised theirs, sold or bought one lately? Just trying to get a feel for what the market is like for them at the mo smile

I test drove a new Cayenne S recently to see if it was worth considering changing. OPC Sales Exec commented that they have a queue of people looking for these and despite ours being 55k miles they’d retail it.

Checking the AUC site there are six for sale....when you think they imported a few thousand of them I think that tells you how popular they are. If it’s good spec don’t give it away.

Mine’s been a been back to the OPC a lot recently. Transfer box replaced, some problem with sensors triggering engine management warning and a leak in the A/C system causing a wet passenger foot well.

That's good to know Cheib, thank you. If you don't mind me asking - which OPC? It doesn't cost anything to ask but thought I'd have a go at selling it myself with only 4k miles ago putting new disks+pads, tyres, and service at OPC Nottingham with Porsche warranty till next year.

eta - yes I also had the transfer box issue - February this year. Replaced under warranty.

Another owner here, 55 plate and we love it. We were thinking of going hybrid Cayenne this yr but frankly - why? Neither of us do the travelling that we used to pre Corona. Why spunk the best part of £100k for something that does the same as now but 20% more efficiently?
We had the cardon tube done 2 yrs ago under warranty and Crawfords did new brakes etc last Dec. She is working perfectly and does anything we ask of her perfectly. I suspect Pork may well find quite a few of us questioning the need to replace/upgrade.

Yup they’re great cars.

If a low mileage one came up in a good spec I’d be tempted to buy it.
