Hi all, does the fibre cam gear give any warning i it is worn and perhaps about to fail. Mine hasn't been changed ever to my knowledge and I suspect it.

I've just got the car back from the mechanic who had the gearbox out and put the service kit on it due to very noisy spigot bearing. Gearbox is now nice and quiet but I can now hear a high whirring sound in neutral and in gear that changes with engine revs. Mechanic had a good listen with the old long handled screwdriver and said it sounded central and towards the front of the engine. Water pump is almost brand new so we're thinking maybe timing gear?

Does this sound likely/familiar?

If so, I can order one (no stock) of these https://www.burtonpower.com/oe-style-fibre-camshaf... or the steel version tv1423S which is 40 pounds cheaper.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

216 notes plus fitting (looks like you don't do your own spannering) ? I'd live with a bit of noise! wink

the timing gear (fibre) is made of fibre that it runs quiet!!

timing gears made of fibre never "tell you" in advance before they destroy themselves.

gearbox was out and now you have a noise...i guees its related to that.

or you viscous cooling fan is stuck and always runs...but this sounds more like a hissing noise than wining

A thought here is that you should run the engine minus the fan belt and listen again, so as to eliminate bearings from the noise. A@
