Grille Painting
Discussion
My V8 Vantage grille slats had been painted black before I bought it from the AM dealer. It looked perfect but after just a thousand miles last summer it was getting chipped and the silver anodised finished was really showing through. Not impressed and I wondered who had painted it and with what.
I bought some PlastiDip and even dicked about with some ppf, what a waste off time! My brother owns a wheel refurbishment company and a nice powder coating oven, plus he’s a fussy b****r. So off they went to be done in satin black. He wasn’t happy with the first pass, did them again and they were perfect.
The thickness of the powder coat meant I had to sand back the paint and the spacers for the slats to fit and needed a plastic faced hammer to persuade them. Would have been easier if just one pass not two, or a strip down after the first but he did me a favour, so I wasn’t quibbling!
We’re not long back from a 2k mile trip to the Mille Miglia including a lot of Autoroute, not a mark on them. So I’d definitely recommend powder coating with the right etching pre- treatment.
