Was hoping someone could help me decide. Patiently waiting to pull the trigger on either a Golf R or M140i, but very aware that the new 1er and Mk8 will be appearing next year. Does anyone know roughly what price affect this'll have on the old 1er and Mk7/7.5 when the new M135i/R get released? I also guess it might take a good few years from now for the new models to start hitting the used market for any change to come about...

Cheers!

Why not PCP it, then the future price will be set today, regardless of what happens with the newer models?

Admittedly I'm speculating, but I reckon the M140i will hold its value very well on the basis that many will see it as more desirable than its successor for various reasons.

Think they will do ok but a lot of the folk who lease just want the latest, the YouTube vloggers might not be as bothered about cylinder counts and rwd, there are also quite a few about which will keep prices down, plenty to go around and could be a long time before they hit the bottom of the depreciation curve.

The new model will gain acceptance, like our dog will eat his dry dog food eventually rather than starve if no scraps come his way the punters will stop moaning and get used to the new model, a few good reviews, get used to the styling and will be business as usual and the old model may be a bit old news for a while.

Very true - will be interesting to see what happens there. Not a fan of the new one!

If the 140 is of serious consideration and you want new, don’t hang round too because stock is dwindling.

I collected mine last week and was talking to the dealer re the new one and he’s had no interest in it so far.

Yep, the new 1-Series is a bit of a dog's dinner.

M140i's should hold their money well long term as the last of the small 6 pot RWD BMWs

Personally I don't think the M140s will hold their values massively well until a few years down the line. They are an incredibly common car & still available on 18 and 19 plates used so IMO no reason for them to retain value especially well despite the new 1 potentially being a bit naff

There are two things that cause the value of an old model to plummet when the new comes out.

Firstly, if the manufacturer is heavily discounting the old model to clear the decks of stock then this will have a knock on effect on values even before the new model hits the showrooms. This is already the case with BMW 1 series so the effect of the new model is already priced in.

Secondly, even if the old model hasn't been distress-sold then the availability of the new model at the same price as the old will cause the old model to drop in order to make it attractive in comparison to the new model. Only way around this is if the new model is significantly more expensive than the old ( see Porsche's pricing strategy with each successive new 911).

That’s really helpful and interesting - didn’t think about that on the 1er. Cheers!

Neither will hold value, in fact I will say that both will be quite badly affected by the release of the new cars and inevitable cheap PCP deals. Just look at the value of F10 M5's to see how the F90 prices and BMW contributions / price reductions have affected them.

Either buy and don't worry about the value, or wait and get a new model.

I think you'd be in la la land to think M140is will hold value.

I wonder if the same goes for the pre-facelift models ... quite tempted by a mk7 as apposed to a 7.5. Guess it will partially be priced in already like with the pre-facelift m135/40

I agree. For those who can afford it, a 3 litre petrol engined hatch is great but the used market is quite different and while a few will see them as desirable most will not. High running costs compared to other BMW 1ers will make it less desirable for most. Recent ones have been heavily discounted already.

The next 140i will be a 4 pot AWD so prices for the six pot RWD should stay sensible but still depreciating. Also there are a lot of heavily discounted M140's for sale with 28k being the number that lands you one.

+1

£10,000 available off them, but very very few left now.

You say that

But the C63 when 6.2v8 and moving to 4ltr TTv8 was going to be hell it would kill it off. Guess what it didn’t and the newer model is even better.

Buy the car you like and enjoy it PCP it if your worried about £ that way it’s a fixed risk/known cost.

Slightly off-topic, but having driven both, I totally disagree with your conclusion that the new one is better.

Sadly not seeing much price movement yet - hope the MK8s aren’t delayed with all that’s going on
