Had an S60 (2015) for a short period, D4 Auto. The gear box was ok but at roundabouts and junctions it was a little jerky and took a second or two to make its mind up and get going nothing major but a little annoying after a while I found, personally.What's people's thoughts?

Wife's got a 2016 petrol v40. It does 40+ mpg, the gearbox is efficient, but makes a weird noise when you put the clutch down. It's done it since new, but as my wife doesn't hear it, nothing's ever been done about it.
We drove it to the alps once to go skiing and it did 45mpg at french motorway speeds. She loves it's ability to annoy audi drivers who don't expect a volvo to be attempting to overtake them on the M6 near Penrith....
In the time she's owned it, and put the best part of 35k miles on it, it's needed at tyre and the screenwash topping up.
The stereo controls are largely unfathomable, the heated seats are brutally efficient, and the automatic climate control is determined.
The boot's enormous and the interior creates endless opportunities for my wife to store things. She's lost 3 pairs of sunglasses in it now.

My dad has a d4 xc70 auto and having driven it a few times I too would have reservations about the gearbox.Just seemed a little too dim witted and indecisive for my liking. A friend had a 335d which despite being a few years older seemed to have, in my opinion at least, a much better gearbox.

I put ~55000 miles onto my 2014 v40 cross country D3 before it got stolen. Great seats, great engine (the older 5 cylinder block) but limited boot space for the size of the car - it is really small. Navigation systems and ICE are very ‘last generation’ and basic, but do the job. The winter pack with heated seats and screen is good. The driver support pack with adaptive cruise makes for a great motorway mile muncher.
Volvo servicing is good but expensive -find yourself a good indie.

We have a 64 plate V40 T3 so a 1.6 turbo petrol with 150bhp.
Very, very pleased with it. We bought it last year on 20k miles and immediately did a 1k French road trip which really demonstrated it's strength as a long distance cruiser.
Excellent stereo and air con, very economical for a petrol. Nice manual gearbox. Very quiet.
Really pleased with it. For us it's probably a little small as our little one is very lobg for his age so we may change in the next year or so depending on finances. I fancy a V60 next.

Early diesel V40s from the 2012 launch had either Ford/PSA or Volvo 5-cylinder engines, later ones had Volvo 4-cylinder deisels. The transition was gradual, starting with the D4 (D4204T14) in 2015 I believe.
Along with the engine transition the gearboxes changed too, 4-cylinders having Asin gearboxes, which are quite different to the Ford/Volvo offerings.
So you really need to check out the engine/gearbox combo of the car you intend on buying.
