Well after several happy months of 993 ownership, I have decided it has to go ! I think I must be mad but the Mrs just doesent like it or want to drive it.

Its all porsche's fault !! as when my 993 went in for door check straps, wheel refurb, bonnet respray etc etc etc to make it 120% perfect (which has cost 000's) they lent us a boxter and the rot set in !!!

So after 5 weeks with the boxter which seems very similar in both the interior and driving style to the 996 she absoloutly loved it and I have to admit secretly I quite enjoyed the ease of driving daily perish the thought.

Its certainly not a 911 and compared to the 993 it has less character but we have two classic 911's and its time for a change !!!

Having now had the following done to it :

Door check straps £1350
Wheel Refurb £450
Bonnet Respray £500
Rear Wings resprayed ££750
Parking dent Removed £ .....

You can see I must be mad ...... but hey you only live once and I want some peace at home....

I feel like I am leaving the fold of 993 owners and going into RMS, engine failure , crap build quality etc etc teritory !! I am sure it can be that bad

So if any one is after a near perfect NO DENTS or SCRATCHES AT ALL but(slight tear in rear screen) 1997 993 cab with 80K and Air con (working), kevlar sports seats, 6 c.d etc etc etc in black start looking in the clasifieds !!

Or if anyone wants to swap + cash a 996 cab in silver or black with sports seats (heated) a must I am told now !!!! Then drop me a line

Thanks for all the help and support with the 993 questions and queries in the past

Crikey. The lesson we can all take from this is don't let the Mrs drive loan cars.

£1350 ..... at one point they were claiming £3000.00 oh how I laughed ..... Not !!!

I guess the benifit of porsche doing the work is that it all has the 10 year guarantee .... which may be handy.

Its a RHD and I am looking for about 28k had acouple of offeres from dealers already !!

1997 993 cab with that sort of mileage....you really gonna get £28k for it ?
If the wife likes the boxster then she will like the early 996's which look similar inside & out.....so get a 996 cab ! She will never notice.

Not sure, have been offered not far off that by the trade so I think 28k is not far off the mark but I very open to coments......

AS for early 996's, probably going to look for a 2000 / 2001 with a good spec in black or silver

Phib, What is a 'door check strap'???, and why so much money?

Door check straps are the straps that stop the door from opening fully ( i.e. back on them selves)

To have them repaired properly you have to take off both front wings and both doors then re weld the door straps back on. Then they re spray the pillars where they are attached then re fit and ajust the doors and front wings.

The basic signs of this I belive are when the doors start creaking / clicking on hinges

Hope that makes sense

Just realised phibs already had long conversation about this issue - including the enormous expense/daylight robbery. Do a search for 'check strap'

996 Cabriolet ownership - oh its just awful. Oil all over the garage floor, plumes of black smoke, bits of broken trim all over.

Oh, and: remote electric roof in 20 seconds, hard top for the winter, AC that works.......

I'll get my coat, before the 993 guys wake up

Yep 996 drivers never get lost, they just follow home the trail of oil left behind them whenever they drive anywhere
