Last year, at MOT time, the trusty family Volvo 940 was given its final warning due to a rusty bulkhead. They said they’d fail it this year and it would be scrap.

It’s the area around where the speedo cable comes through into the engine bay and has rusted to about 2.5” diameter.

To me this just seems ridiculous but perhaps I’m missing how significant it is. So, do we just go somewhere else to have it tested as they’re just being picky, or is it a genuine fail? Any ideas?

Significant corrosion within 12" or 30cm of a suspension /steering etc component is a fail.

In your pic I can see something looking like the above.

Ah yes, that rings a bell as to what they said! Bugger. Any idea whether it’s fixable? I wondered about bodging it and hiding it with a large rubber grommet - I know it’s wrong but does seem a bit silly.

You might as well put it in for the test ,it might fail on other stuff to make your mind up on whether it's viable to

repair .

Then ask them how much to repair if the fail list is short.

If their quote seems excessive ,try other places for repair quotes ,I did this for my FIAT 18 months ago and it cost

me significantly less to get back on the road than if the original MOT station had welded it to their perfection standards.

Sounds like a plan! That was the route we were going to try, to somewhere else and take the risk that they may or may not fail it. Brake lines need doing as well which we don’t mind paying for but any more than £400 or so and it’s not really worth doing. Cheers for the input!

The bulk of labour in that job will be stripping out anything imflammable on the inner side of the bulkhead, welding in a patch would only take about 30 minutes.
