Morning all, it's been a while since I have been on here, so appologies in advance if this is posted in the wrong place.

I fancy a FIAT 124 Spider, and REALLY fancy an Abarth. Wondering a 'rough' cost to repair this one? Is it possible to get a ball-park figure from photos?

And it will be 'Cat S' once repaired - how much damage does this do to the value when I come to sell?

General thoughts on the wisdom of going this route please?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIAT-ABARTH-SPIDER-124-...

Thanks in advance.

Not particularly helpful I know but that looks like A LOT of damage IMO, needs an entire front end D/S airbags, plus looking at that engine bay shot that front support/panel looks pretty mangled so could need some front of engine parts or a radiator.

In terms of resale CAT cars tend to be advertised a couple of thousand under the cheapest non CAT car regardless of mileage, and I don't know how well they sell anymore cant say I have any personal experience in them.

I wouldn't bother unless you're doing everything yourself - using the rates I was quoted last time I had a car written off you're looking at >£15k in repair quote (>80% market value for the repairs alone) at the outside, plus you've got the drop in value (at least 20% imho) from it being a write-off, and a £7k purchase price.

Considering an unmolested one is £18-20k just buy one of those.

Looking at the damage itself I'd think the chassis leg will need a pull to straighten it up, and a complete new front end, possibly the nose of the engine damaged as well.

I suspect if you don't already know the answers to the questions you are asking, you shouldn't be buying a bent car.

Yeah unless you know 100% what you're doing or can do the work yourself walk away.

The only time buying a write-off like that makes sense:

You can buy direct from the salvage wholesaler/auction (e.g. Copart) to remove a layer of margin
The car is older and only cosmetically damaged
You intend to run it into the ground

I do the latter whenever I need to replace my motorbike but make sure it's only cosmetic damage and I never pay more than £1k for the bike (my theft excess)

That car has the visibility pack, headlights are £2000 each.

That's a lot of damage on that! Bumper, lights, wings, bonnet (might need bonnet hinges too?), wings, probably doors if the wings have hit them, slam panel, crumple zone structures, probable rad, intercooler & condenser, maybe frame damage, and an engine they appear to have let soak in the rain. That's a lot to repair really!

I only see that as a parts car personally, unless you're planning to do all the work yourself? Wasn't there a chap with a similar amount of damage on a GT86 who did it all himself?

It's quite a rare car so parts are going to be very expensive, if it were an MX5 it would be a lot cheaper for replacement parts as you could find a breaker and swap over.

Engine also looks like it's slightly off center so the rails could be twisted and if so would need to be put in a jig to straighten properly.

Thanks all - I guess that has answered my question definitively!

I might look at a straight non-Abarth car instead.

Cheers, Noggin.

The Abarths were released late 2016 and many were sold on lease.

So there could be a glut of them coming onto the market later this year.

Might bring the prices down a little?

The Abarth is worth the extra over the standard Spider.

For that sort of money I'd want a total invisibility pack.

I'm not sure they are tbh. The Abarth is no doubt very good, but they were very expensive - almost twice the price base model v base model (albeit the base abarth has the mod cons of a more expensive spider, but still quite a big premium) - for basically the same performance.

Lol...

It's crazy how much some parts are nowadays.

And I guess it's one of the things that's fueling the theft of many modern cars.

Yes, I feel sorry for the people who paid full price for them early on.

But for the past year you've been able to buy one at £10,000 less than new price, for a car done just a few thousand miles.

Not many manual cars about at the moment though, plenty of autos.

Performance wise you do get a bit more power over the standard 124.

Plus LSD, Bilstein suspension, Brembo brakes, Monza exhaust, Alcantara bits inside.

The mk4 Mx5 has pop up bonnets (active bonnets), there was a thread on the owners club of someone managing to set it off and the damge cost £4k without any other damage.
Assume the 124 is the same. The bonnet certainly looks like it has popped up...

Glad to see the OP saw sense that's a huge & expensive amount of damage.

Paid 13K for a 67 plate 124 Classica on 12,000 miles.

Great blank canvas, will tune to 180hp and with a decent set of wheels and exhaust should be good until I get bored and want something else.

I did indeed see sense, thanks to the collective wisdom of this forum.

Today a highly recommended repair place phoned me back to say that having seen the photos they think £2500 & VAT, plus parts to put it right.

Sounds suspiciously cheap to me.
