Just looking online at lunch I saw that there are guided tours around Upper Heyford.

I was wondering if anyone had done one and what they were like.

I toured the site a few years ago with Sub Brit. Fantastic place depending on what you get to see. Can’t remember it all be we toured the nuclear quick reaction compound, viewed the hangars, climbed the tower. We went round the hardened bunkers with the red hotline phones and toured the weapons storage facilities.

It was a really fascinating day, depending on your definition of fascinating. I’d very much recommend it.

Also flew around it a few times in a light aircraft and viewed it close up from the air, that was good fun too.

I got a tour almost 10 years ago, back then they weren't advertising them, you just had to contact someone to get one. I really enjoyed it, the guide was knowledgeable and if you're interested in the history of USAFE I'd definitely recommend it.

I'm sure things have changed since then, but the old base petrol station and commissary were still there abandoned when I visited as well.

Couple of pictures, it was a wet and grey November day!

My first exercise when I got on a Squadron, sat on a Rapier SHORAD kit right at the end of the runway at Upper Heyford as the whole wing of F1-11's lined up and took off. It was rather good.

I grew up under the pattern at Upper Heyford, and despite living all over the world, am living back in the area. My wife teaches in what was once the Officer's Mess!
