how do I open the boot?

A close friend died earlier this year, leaving among other cars a chim, I am trying to sell for his widow.
looks like he has moved the battery to the boot which seems a common thing,

there is no battery in the footwell anyway, how do I open the boot if the battery is flat?

+ve onto back of alternator and -ve to a good earth.
