I have a 1996 BMW 840Ci 4.4 petrol which needs new batteries (there are two in the boot). I would choose to use Bosch. Does anyone know if I need the S4 or S5 type? Any other recommendations?

Thank you.

Either the Bosch batteries will do the job, but the Yuasa batteries that Halfords offer are very good also. Their 19 battery is the big one needed IMO

See what offers ECP have on their website for the batteries, same with Carparts4less (Another ECP brand) but their prices are usually OTT to begin with, so the discount makes it look a good offer, when really it's not.

If their prices are still high, go with the Yuasa from Halfrauds

Can also try Tayna https://www.tayna.co.uk/

Been the cheapest for me last couple of times.

Thanks for both these replies.

I have taken the old batteries out and pre ordered 2 X Bosch S5 74 amp/hr in the right size. £198 each but with a 50% price saving code from Euro Car Parts so happy with that - £198 for both.

The car is new to me and the paperwork history suggests that one battery was renewed in 2010 and the other in early 2016.

I found a battery cut off in the boot (like a race car battery isolator). I don't know if it was a factory fit or f it works but I will test it when I put the new batteries in.

Glad the ECP offer was decent; they'll do the job nicely smile

IIRC that cut off switch is in BMWs when they're transported, but then removed once sold etc; however, with the 8 series having 2, it could be that it's meant to be there

You could always stick your VIN into a VIN decode website and see what it states re the specs of the car and that cut off switch etc
