VW Golf TDI MK5 reversing issue!

Hi my Golf has stoped reversing this evening, I went to reverse in to a parking bay and it just kept going forward! I’ve had no problems at all up until now, there’s no grinding, slipping or any kind of noise and every other gear works fine. I literally do what I always do to reverse and it shoots forward! Any ideas of what it could be and if how much I could be looking at for a repair?

Try pressing the brake pedal, it's the one in the middle if it's a manual.

Erm & what’s that got to do with reversing? I’ve been driving for 20+ years, if I don’t know where the brake is by now I’m pretty f***ed to be honest! Thanks for being so unhelpful!!!!

You put it into the reverse gear position and it goes forward, correct? Has one of the linkages come off the gear change? Top of the gearbox if you're looking.

Reverse is top and to the left when looking at gear stick - assuming its a manual, Does the gear lever need to be pushed down or a collar lifted up to stop getting it mixed up with 1st ?

If it isn't a linkage fault, it's going to be an internal fault in the gearbox.

I dare bet it's a linkage fault. Out-of-adjustment, or somethings popped off so it selects first instead of reverse.

Common problem for the fork inside the box to detach as they used a rivet that breaks off.
easily fixed with a nut and bolt.
But will have to remove box to repair
