I bought a car back in December 2017 from an independent garage.
When I bought it I paid for a HPI check to tell me if it had been written off or not which it hadn’t.. ive come to sell the car now and just out of curiosity paid more for a vehicle check which has flagged up as outstanding finance as a hire purchase.
I have an invoice and receipt from the garage I bought the car off, but now I’m worried about selling the car?
I’ve never been contacted by the finance company to get the car back or anything..
I’m going to ring the finance company in the morning but wondering if anybody has had a similar situation or knows what I can do
Thanks!

It’s not unheard of for a finance record to remain on HPI even long after it has been paid off so don’t panic just yet, normally a call to HPI will clear it up.

Does the check show you the date the HP agreement was starter and how long it was for?

The only date it provides is January 2017, I assumed this is when the finance agreement started but unsure.
I’ve spoke to somebody who had something similar happen when the car they bought was previously handed back to the finance company and the finance called off, but the HPI hadn’t updated yet..
If I ring the finance company and they say it’s not on hire purchase anymore is there any way I can get that in writing do you think?

You should be able to get it in writing from them that they have no longer a financial interest in the car.

IF they do (very unlikely) then its the dealers problem to sort out, not yours.
