My first Porsche - I have some questions!
Discussion
Hi Guys,
My first post here. A couple of days ago I picked up my first Porsche and sold my 2015 Audi TT. I've had my eyes on buying a 981 for over a year now and have pretty much searched the market every night before going to bed. I finally found one which was slightly more expensive than I'd have liked (I wanted to be on the 30-32 mark) but it was only slightly higher with over 11 grand of options!
I bought a Red Guard 981 (2.7) with PDK. It has an incredible spec and pretty low mileage (13,000).
It includes 20inch wheels, Sports wheel and the Chrono Package. I've never had so many people turn their heads to look at my car before (perhaps they're wondering why a younger guy is driving a bright red sports car haha!) Either way, I'm super happy with the car and I think it was a reasonable price.

Now the questions.
I know the Cayman is supposed to do 0-62 a little slower than my old TT (just under 6 seconds) but are there any specifications of the Caymans speeds in Sports Plus mode? When in Sports Plus, my car feels way faster than the TT and I've never been knocked back in my seat like it before. Is the Cayman actually faster than the figures released?
Secondly, the car is a 15 plate with 13,000 on the clock. Does anybody have a kind of valuation of what it costs to get the car fully serviced to be able to buy a Porsche Warranty. Some people have told me not to worry however I had a multitude of issues with my TT (mainly electronic issues) and I don't really want to be hit by a huge pricey bill for something covered by a warranty.
Thanks
Happy Driving!

Greetings - nice motor
Porsche are usually conservative with their BHP and performance figures so you may find your car is a little faster than the published figures.
As for the warranty, you'd need an OPC to do a major [4yr] service if it hasn't got one already, plus a 111-point check at £200ish quid and the warranty is around £600 for one year or £1100 for two years. If the check brings up non-standard parts that require replacing or other work you have to have that done before a warranty can be added.
Hope that helps, enjoy your car!

Thanks, I'll contact my local Porsche Center and see what they can do.

Is there anything as new Porsche owner that I should know regarding looking after the vehicle and maintaining it. Any Do's and Dont's?
Thanks
official performance figures pretty conservative - also one or two passengers and full or quarter full fuel tank makes a noticeable difference in a light weight car. Wouldn't be at all surprised if it's nearer 5 secs to 60 than 6 secs with one passenger and quarter tank and sport or sportplus.
The 2.7 is a lovely engine, but I wouldn't, get fixated with 0-60 times - it's not what the car excels at. Chase the revs and it sounds great and goes decently quickly.
Sport chrono and good traction result in respectable 0-60 times compared with hot hatches. Unfortunately much more midrange (turbo ) torque and more sensible gear ratios mean plenty of hot hatches and hot diesels will often be quicker in a straight line.

I came from a TTS to a 981 Cayman S, the TTS was probably a faster but from the moment I test drove the Porsche I knew it was what I wanted. When I picked it up a week later and left the Audi behind, the TT was never missed. The 981 is about so much more than just speed... it took me a while to really get to grips with what it can really do but it is so rewarding, a proper sports car with a proper NA engine in the right place. Personally it’s the right size, enough power and speed... I don’t need anymore of either.

I also went the same way! (sort of :-D) from a MK3 TTS S-Tronic to a fully loaded 981 Boxster S PDK. Off the mark, TTS was quicker but from a roll there is no doubt in my mind the 981 was the quicker car but also the much sharper car. Oh and the noise!
On the fun scale it was on another level too! .... the smiles per miles for me were in abundance and the 981 Boxster S was easily the best car I have ever had. Like you, never missed the TTS and did bore of it fairly quickly. The Porsche, nearing a month on from selling it and I still miss it.

Well my TT did feel rather stale, I do too suspect it being slightly faster off the line but the Cayman rolling just keeps giving with that 7500 RPM.
I'm loving the car so much but I'm still getting used to it. I haven't been giving it too much round corners since this is my first RWD vehicle. I have felt the car to be way more direct and engaging when driving. I love the heavy steering wheel.
The sound is the real thing though, in sports plus; my god. It's actually nicer sounding than a lot of super cars, it just sounds so aggressive and shouty and puts a bloody smile on my face every time it roars.

Why are you selling and what are you looking to replace it with?

I've got the 981 Cayman S 3.4 with PSE + Sport plus, it sounded very well for a stock car, I've now got race headers on it and my god its immense haha. HighwayStar said:
Mine was a MK2 TTS manual... CS is a PDK. The TTS was a good car in as much as it was nice to look at to my eyes, nice place to be and relatively cheap to run. On the road.. effective is the word I'd use. Fun is a word I wouldn't use. The Cayman was fun from the moment the key turned and the F6 announced itself and 3 years later it still is.

Ah OK. I agree, TT is a nice looking car and very nice place to sit (Virtual cockpit and Super Sport Seats), but I just loved the looks of the 981 (Boxster/ Cayman). My Boxster was absolutely loaded to the hilt! and the lovely leather over the whole dash and doors made it feel special and that F6, hood down, oh my word it was heaven! Why are you selling and what are you looking to replace it with?
Cars already sold. Longest I've kept a car since I had my R56 Mini JCW.... now looking to try either an F56 Mini JCW or an E92 M3 Competition Pack car.
Only sold the Boxster as I've recently moved home and I actually love the new place more than the car, which wasn't really getting any use as I only drove the car on dry weekends! Hated the thought of it ever not looking nice and clean, inside and out.

Can only imagine what yours sounds like with those add ons?!

Yeah, my Boxster S had those too, hood down and it was just amazing, goose pimply of the highest order!

60+ Porsche's did a 70 mile twisty road trip the other day, they all noticed mine haha.
Can only imagine what yours sounds like with those add ons?!

Best thing is, turn the PSE off and it sounds like a normal Cayman S.

.......... 2 of my friends have one, a Boxster S and a Cayman R, and they love them too. Mine will never be sold
I love my R and, like HighwayStar, I can't imagine selling. I guess one day it'll happen followed by instant regret and a substantial period of mourning and self loathing!! These cars make you feel part of the drive, and part of the machine rather than just an "operator". We have a 2017 S3 (310PS) and I get no thrill from the drive, despite it being fast and a great car to travel in. I used to rag about in the 2004 MCS (modified to 200-ish bhp) and now its replacement FN2 CTR rather than the S3, as they both feel more like you're driving them. For the 111 check, I've seen people get significant discounts if doing it at the same time as a service, so be cheeky and ask, plus don't be afraid to play one OPC off against another - it often works. My 111 was done for half price just by asking when I renewed the warranty for 2 more years (they don't seem to discount the warranty at all). The warranty is very strict on mods and any deviation from spec, even on tyres not being N-rated so go in with eyes open. Since everything seems to be £1k or more to fix, I will likely keep mine under a warranty for as long as they will cover it, although I am very tempted not to in favour of specialists and the cheaper labour rates.
