If I go to a nice restaurant or bar I will wear wool trousers with a nice belt and shirt tucked in whereas everyone else I see is wearing dark jeans. Am I missing something?

To me, tucking a shirt into jeans looks a bit “off”. How do you think a man dressed in wool trousers with a shirt tucked in with nice shoes and belt looks? Is it a good look?

Do you mean slacks? Unless you are an octogenarian, yes you are unusual, but you have noticed that yourself in the first post.

Only you can tell us if you are odd. What weird things do you do? ears

I'm not a fan of jeans, and think they look a bit silly on adults (and especially those over about 25). I recognise I'm in the significant minority with those views so it's just an opinion.

To me, 'smart' jeans and a tucked in shirt look a bit odd... a bit try hard, like someone going on their first date. Especially if paired with trainers! Smart(er) shoes don't work so well with jeans either, so it's an odd choice.

I find it odd we insist you can only be neat wearing a shirt. I hate the bloody things and avoid them unless absolutely necessary.

If you are talking about wool flannel trousers (in mid grey for example), I'd say that is (by modern day standards) a relatively formal look for non work setting but totally acceptable. Probably needs a sports coat for the top half. With the weather as it is, a nice pair of chinos might be a reasonable alternative.

As to whether it's a "good look", I suppose it depends who you ask. The current trend among the early 20 y/o appears to be trousers that you'd confuse for leggings!

Jeans have evolved. They are no longer the farmer or working man's attire. They are now considered acceptable for many occasions.

I don't see a problem with a shirt tucked in jeans, however it has to be the right kind of shirt and the right kind of jeans (matched to the right footwear) to look decent.

Fully agree. So, what sort of trousers do you wear. I tend to wear something like this with a nice dress shirt tucked in:

Appropriate footware is appropriate. Trainers are appropriate for training, jeans are not.

And yes OP, if you have to ask the question you probably are.

There's nothing wrong with that - this is the time of year I start rocking linen trousers. I don't think you can really wear trousers without a shirt, so I do that. I think linen trousers and a cotton shirt is going to be more comfortable than jeans.

I do often sport a shirt and jeans, but not tatty faded jeans, dark blue. A shirt, to me, is fine with those.

Always proper shoes though, no trainers.

I'm 30, by the way.

I went to a posh restaurant yesterday, in shorts, t-shirt and converse.

I don't even know what wool trousers are?
Are they just ordinary suit trousers without a jacket?

Suits are for offices, weddings and funerals.

I never tuck a shirt in though, whether it's jeans or shorts

Btw I'm 57

One of the joys of being almost 70 is that you can forget about fretting over whether you're dressed appropriately and be yourself. No one gives a damned and that's how it should be.
