Pikes Peak claims Carlin Dunne at the top of his game
Discussion
Absolutely gutted to read this
I have been following this and watching the YouTube videos while he tests out the new prototype Ducati. His times were meant to be on set to break the record too
To make it worse people had complained about the bump right at the end and asked officials to sort this...

fok me...

just watched this video, it seems to be generally a very bumpy road...

Does not seem to be that fast a speed (of course, videos always deceive) and IOM TT is sooo much more mental and faster but all these guys have brass balls
Sad, sad news...

I went up in a rental car about 5 years ago, and on the last corner before the change to dirt, (where finish line is now), IIRC it is a left hander and there were three areas where bumps had been planed out and patched with tarmac, (quite roughly!), one of which was right on the racing line.
So it could be one of these he got caught out by, you felt it properly even in a squidgy Taunus.
Sad incident though, RIP.

He had a few moments in that old video but just after 9 min there's a bit he hits a bump while committed and I'm sure that was near an off moment right there

Jesus!
That's the first time that I've seen a PP run (bike or car), and I have to say, those guys must clank when they walk.
I winced several times, and felt uneasy on the corners with the huge drop off the side. Furthermore, the positioning of some of those "bales" seemed to affect the lines of the rider - ideally he would have still been leaned over on the best line, but had to pick it up to avoid contact.
Respect.

I'm not one for heights but it was nerving enough going up in the car three years ago. As you mention, was surprised about the bales on that video making the rider alter his line. That's the first time that I've seen a PP run (bike or car), and I have to say, those guys must clank when they walk.

When I went up Ken Block was testing for his gymkhana video so saw the destruction on the hill. Wish I had stopped and chatted to him as I spotted him on the way up with the film crew but was sadly in a rush for the plane. Passed him as I was coming down the hill again.
As for Carlin, had been following the new V4 and heard about his records so had hoped he'd take the win. Racing can be so cruel at times.
