Hi Chris,
(1) is as good as you'll get ex-camera. You've got the highlights well; the price you pay is dark everything else. That may be how you wanted it but PS will improve it if you want to.
(2) looks great, can't fault it
(3) doesn't really work for me. It's got the full range of contrast yet still looks flat, esp compared to the one above it. Composition isn't there either.
You've got a good eye and experimentation can only improve it, well done!

I like the idea!
#1 It's good, it's OK, maybe a litle post processing, but I like it.
Yes Sirree!! Hits the right buttons - I'd be 4r3ing around with making it ultra contrasty and the like, when it's just a lovely image! Good one!
#3 I'm a little ambidextrous about this one. Had I taken it, it might be the bin, but I can sort of see it from a different angle, and the shot has promise.
I'm just itching to see your next work if this is where you're starting!!!

Thanks all.
1) This has had no processing so far, just a slight crop, so is "as camera"
2) Been tweaked a bit, cropped & obviously turned B&W, also contrast turned up a bit.
3) "As camera", changed to B&W. Not tweaked yet. I am unsure of the image - I seem to love it one moment & hate it the next...
More to follow...

I posted a link, not so long ago, to a different technique for converting to B&W.
I have been using this, on and off, for a few weeks and quite like it. I can't remember how to do it off the top of my head yet!!
But if you're using PS, you might like a look....

I think the second image with the rope and chain could be a classic that you would want to hang on your wall. I'm sure there's something witty to say about visual tension in the image there !
I suggest you gently burn in the bright white area at the top left of the image and just little on the highlights on the upper surfaces of the rope. Then have another go with levels or even curves to boost the contrast a bit more and make the image really sparkle. Once you're satisfied with that try darkening the edges a bit, stand back and admire.
With the first image I think it may have too many boats in it as my eye won't settle properly. Try cloning some of them out, darkening the image may add to the mood too. As for the third image, well I'm not quite sure what to say, I think its one of those shots that I've got plenty of and represents part of the learning process - an idea that seemed good at the time but hasn't quite come off.
