Strongest OTC painkillers

What can I buy without prescription?
Either single tablet or combination?

Diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my mid-foot and it’s really affecting my quality of life at the moment.
Due to have a steroid injection but need something effective in the meantime.

I have a back issue that gives me continual st, I buy Solpadeine Max when its bad, not sure if it is the strongest or not but its 500mg paracetamol and 12.5mg Codeine per tablet.

Sorry about the back - one of the worst places to have bad pain !

That's it really, bog standard co-codamol. You can take Ibuprofen at the same time.

It is, but it is one of those things, used to it these days (the general pain and burning that come with it) but occasionally without prompting (i.e without even trying to move) it will feel like someone is trying to separate me in two via my spine, I am told this is my muscles going into spasm and that there is nothing wrong that they can find, bit like a car that misbehaves a lot and they can't find out why, with a car you would start replacing sensors and stuff, not so easy with a central nervous system

My family has a history of osteoarthritis conditions so I have that to look forward to as well (early signs already showing in my knees from the age of 30, now 34 and they are getting worse) I feel your pain, hope it gets sorted!

My knees are also knackered and it’s only a matter of time before they get really bad!
I’ve had x-rays and CT scans on the foot and seeing a specialist, he’s diagnosed osteoarthritis but isn’t 100% convinced the pain is actually that!
Nothing else shows up on the images though...

^This. When I did a lot travelling in West and East Africa, I always had a supply as I might have found myself several days away from, say, a dentist I could trust...

But do take very seriously the advice re dependency in the accompanying literature. It is frightening how quickly someone can become addicted, according to my GP.

NO this is wrong.

Max dose for Paracetamol in 24 hrs is 4g. for a normal +60kg human with a normal liver

So if one dose of Co-codamol is 2 tablets, making (usually) 1g of paracetamol; then you have to wait 6 hours for the next dose, assuming 4 doses a day.

2 hour spacing would give 12g of paracetamol in a day and Acute Liver Failure.

You must get the paracetamol dose right, it is quite toxic even in small overdoses. Be careful

On your next Euro vacation purchase some Naproxen. Available OTC from most places other than the UK. Not strictly a painkiller, an antiinflammatory, but the result's the same.

So is taking them both together a much better painkiller than just say co-codamol by itself?

I had a shoulder op 18 months ago and I know the hospital gave me some tiny little painkiller tablets that I didn’t really use - should have them at home somewhere. (if still in date)
Think these would still be ok to use?
I’ll get the name of them when I get home.

I mean space the paracetamol and ibuprofen 2 hours apart. So paracetamol at 9am, then ibuprofen at 11am for example. Or is that still wrong? I was told to do that by my GP when I had a bad back. Do I need a new GP?

I'm 120kg so maybe I am allowed more juice?

They will be fine, easily still above 90% potency.
