Warranty and Tyres/Brakes
Discussion
Hi,
I'm selling my Porsche Cayman 2.9 with an extended warranty. But the warranty runs out on 3rd August. The guy I'm speaking to who is interested says he used to have a 911 but got his fingers burnt repairing it when it went wrong so frequently, so I naturally suggested he extends the warranty if he buys mine. It's what I did and I'd do it again for peace of mind if I was keeping the car.
My question though is: with about 20,000 miles since the discs and pads were last changed, is the guy likely to have to get them all replaced to get Porsche assist? The front tyres are at 4mm now too, it wouldn't surprise me if Porsche ask for these changing too.
I got the car MOT'd on Friday with zero advisories. But my experience of Porsche's 111 check is that it's like the MOT on steroids. The last thing I want to do is sell the guy a car he has to pour money into straight away, but I also don't want to knock money off the price of my car unnecessarily.
Any advice would be much appreciated thanks.

Last month my OPC carried out MOT and 111 point check the same day. Both front tyres were reported to have cuts on the inside but this didn't fail the MOT or 111 point check. 4mm is perfectly legal and they'd have no argument for failing yours on this.
My discs/pads are less than half worn after 47k miles. Depends how you use yours, but why don't you check them yourself, or ask your local indy to do it. Bound to be FOC while you wait.

Thanks for this
it's encouraging to hear you got to 47k miles and the discs were less than half worn.
I had a look myself, but I wouldn't recognise a new disc from a half-worn disc
I don't think I'll mention the discs, it'll just cause doubt and probably for nothing. I'll reiterate to the buyer that I've offered to meet him at my local Porsche centre so he can get the 111 check for peace of mind. And if that flags a problem, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Tread depth for extended warranty has nothing to do with legality (which is 1.6mm iirc)My discs/pads are less than half worn after 47k miles. Depends how you use yours, but why don't you check them yourself, or ask your local indy to do it. Bound to be FOC while you wait.
Porsche stipulate a minimum depth of 3mm or you would need to replace to extend
Id be very careful what you say/suggest to a buyer.
There's a recent thread on here where a private seller has recently received court papers from the buyer after a conversation about the air con. (both private individuals)
Let the buyer make all the decisions, and tell them to inspect things like the brakes, and to make their own mind up.
If the buyer is that worried about future repair bills then suggest they go to the OPC and get a warranted car from them.

I guess that's the scary side to selling more expensive cars. That's a nightmare I don't ever want to get into.
The way I've left it is that the guy can meet me at Porsche if he wants to get it 111 checked first. If the check finds something wrong I'll probably settle the bill for the remedy work if the guy is going to buy my car.

I got mine extended in March with 2mm on both fronts, they made a note that they needed changing but extended all the same. I had had an MOT a few days earlier (which passed obviously). You do however need to ensure that you have a matching set of N rated rubber.
