Be honest, would you buy diesel in 2019?

I’m having the same difficulty at the moment. I recently bought a sheddy 1 series which even now it’s sorted is a hateful car to drive and I want rid of it. I’ve been looking at petrol cars but then spotted some nice diesels too and I’m finding them appealing. The thing is I live quite close to the LEZ so it would mean no driving in there by accident!
Yes I'd buy diesel if it was the best suited option to my needs and wants. Not too worried about the future and diesels unless I lived or worked in a city where ULEZ or similar might have implications.
You haven't mentioned age/year of E91 you are looking at, but the N57 3.0d in later 330d E91s is a great diesel engine (earlier M57s less so). The N52 (early) and N53 (later) in the 330i are both wonderful creamy smooth petrols and the N53 being BMW's last naturally aspirated straight 6. The N53 is better on fuel and fairly decent for what it is, but arguably more complex and potentially less reliable (but no worse than the diesel alternative). There's no real contest between the two in desirability. If you fancy the 330i and don't do crazy high mileage, it's the only option.

Over the last couple of years i've been using a combination of motorbikes and a 130i for my 80 mile each way commute (2-3 times per week).
I did buy an E91 325d (M57) but it was a disaster - 45mpg average wasn't massively better than the 130i, and it suffered with injector issues that made it stink so badly it made be gag.
However i'm now running a Civic 1.6 i-DTEC. It's not as creamy or luxurious as the E91, but fairly cheap at £8k-£10k for a nice one, and it's doing 70+mpg if driven in the right way.
Horses for courses though. If my mileage was lower i'd stick with the 130i, or maybe go for an EV. But for long distances diesel still wins. Maybe the Tesla Model 3 is going to change that, but they're still too expensive.

I bought an E90 330d last year, has been a great car.
Get roughly 40mpg all in, much less in town though. If you've never driven one I would definitely recommend taking one for a test drive, I was on the fence until I did! Hilariously fast for what it is.
Only downside is runflats can be fairly expensive.

Absolutely I would.
My daily is a BMW e91 LCI 330D auto (35k miles) and it is superb. I have a 330ci for short journeys (and track days), so my 330D only does the long-distance trips and days out with the doggo.
I am tempted to sell both cars for an M3 / M5, but I am pretty happy with my setup at the moment.
