I have been offered a head from an M reg fiesta 1.3.
Chap who has it wants £25 and assures me that it is exactly the same head (with the proper valves and seats) as the old crossflow 1.3 and is a direct exchange - any advice or opinions? would not like to strip the head off only to find that the new one would not fit!

i doubt it is
fwd heads are all 4 exhaust ports [i think]
so you'd have to make a special exhaust - if it will bolt on?

The easiest way to see if it will bolt on is by comparing a head gaskets for both engines.

However, another issue might be with the valve gear - any differences in the rocker assemblys might mean that the pushrods can't do there job, and the valves might end up greeting the pistons with a crunch if their lift in relation to the head face differs from the original head.

It might be worth calling an engine specialist fom a classic Ford magazine for advice.

Is it worth going down the unleaded route when 1300 leaded heads are plentiful and cheap and average annual Jago mileages not too excessive?
I have a pile of heads in the garage that no one seems to want- bought a job lot for Burton's price to get one, some with new valves etc.
If you need a spare head to convert or just swap for a tired one this could solve your problems at a stroke! :0 :0

Measur the Fiesta engine I think you will find it is 1.5 inches shorter than your Kent.

Well thanks for that.
I am not too sure about the possible extent of future damage to my engine. Every time I top up red ex is added first - don't bother measuring, just give it a good squirt! I should mention though that I don't do yellow peril any favours - she gets hammered, just the same as anything I drive! I once bought a fiat 124s direct from Turin, when I collected it - at the factory, the foreman finisher told me never to change gear below the red marks on the speedo - that car never let me down and was capable of 120 mph+ despite the maximum speed being rated as 105 mph!
I was even thinking of doing some preventative maint. even though I am an advocate of it I usually follow the maxim "if it aint broke don't fix it"
I do however love my Jago more than anything else I've ever owned and do want to ensure that I continue to enjoy it for a long time!

sitting quietly in the pub i had a real thought of importance
kent is ex in in ex ex in in ex
spanish head is ex in ex in ex in ex in
so... first 2 ex in valves would work... but 3rd one would on a kent [if it fits] fitted with a spanish head be a ex valve head wise being operated by an inlet valve cam wise - so if it fits would need the cam too - still worth thinking about - if it fits and if the can fits too - getting mind blowing - thinking this late at night - but the spanish head will definately not work just bolted onto a kent - it cant without cam
but will the cam fit?????
i need more beeeeeeeer lol

If i remember correctly the only comonly used parts from fiesta valencia engine, as far as kent use goes, is the electronic distributor. thats worth doing. I have a wiring diagram to suit if anyone does this.

If my memory serves me correctly it is the kent engine. However, i seem to remember an article in classic ford a while back that pointed out it was a different casting. No engine mounting points on the sides of the block and also the cylinders were a little closer together. I think thats right! Therefore, if thats the case then the head wont fit either. Maybe worth checking out with a fiesta specialist. Classic ford mag being the obvious place for the addresses.

Hope that rambling is of some further use!

looked on a fiesta site same bore and stroke as a 1600 rwd xflow but after looking at all the sites in a "fiesta ring" none had a pic of the engine bay
mind you they were describing the valencia as a cross flow which has a smaller bore - wonder if thats the one with bores closer together????
chasing and stopping a mk 1 xr2 is the first step now i need to fit a v6 to keep up with an xr2 lol
