Had a test on the S1000RR this morning. Had a pretty decent ride over good B and A roads that I know. Pretty amazing machine. Felt much like my sorely missed GSXR 750 but with much,
much more power. Yes I know it has 50% more but it felt more like twice the power. A tried roll on acceleration in 6th from about 50 to overtake and was shocked how quickly it went (even compared to my K1300S).
Agility was amazing. Of course, I haven’t ridden a sports bike for a year so my reference point is currently the K13. However even with that in mind it felt really agile. So much fun.
However - just too much for the road (for me). Even trying hard to keep speeds down I found myself going more quickly than I am comfortable with. Kept short shifting but that doesn’t really help as the acceleration is so strong pretty much in every gear and seemingly everywhere in the rev range.
What was strange is that a couple of weeks back I tested the KTM Duke 790. I loved it but when I got back on the K13 is felt better than on the ride to the dealer. However on the ride back on the K13 it didn’t feel good after the S1000RR. Odd.

How did it compare to the Panigale V4 you owned?, I’ve got a test ride on one in a couple of weeks, going to hold off buying one this year and keep the Ducati though as wouldn’t want to take delivery in the winter and want a bike this summer, plus there’s a Honda rumour I want to wait and see if it’s true or not first.

Can you share the rumour?Walter Sobchak said:

Difficult comparison as I only had the V4 during the running in period so never got to open it up properly. V4 was easy to ride fast but the BMW seemed even more straightforward. From memory the V4 was taller. The BMW felt incredibly small and light. I would be interested in hearing what you think once you’ve ridden it compared to the Ducati.

Sure I will let you know, for what it’s worth I don’t think there’s going to be a lot in it between them, although the BMW will be easier to ride and not be constantly trying to burn you I expect!.I would be interested in hearing what you think once you’ve ridden it compared to the Ducati.

Definitely had my heart beating a bit faster! Engine sounded slightly rough at tickover but on the move was silky smooth. I expect if you are used to twins or V4 you could say it lacked character but I like inline 4s and found it great.
Nothing wrong with an inline 4!, they’re very smooth compared to twins, V4s can be pretty smooth too but not the Ducati one(which has a firing order that makes it more twin like)Walter Sobchak said:

Aprilia V4 is not particularly smooth at low rpms either.

I’ve owned both and they’re smoother than the Ducati imo, and sound nicer too.I like triples, the best of both worlds, torque, narrow and smooth.
Best and smoothest V4s are the Hondas, that distinctive drone and gear driven cam whine
