Discussion
Is there a level of expectation to receive feedback for a job you have applied for, either positive or negative? I mean in legal terms? Or is it simply down to the company to offer it or not?
I say this after being phone interviewed for a role, quite far away, hence the phone chat, being told then I might expect to go up there for a short of prolonged working interview. Which I was fine, the interview went really well.
Then despite writing twice, have heard absolutely nothing. This is over a two week period.
I have no issue about not hearing back if you apply for a job and they are not interested. But to be interviewed and hear nothing seems a little harsh if not rude.

I would imagine they have picked a candidate, and will just send out a batch of the same email in a few days, there are numerous vacancies for the company, so perhaps as second poster said, just too busy to respond to individuals.
Damn frustrating as the job was awesome and the phone chat went really smoothly and well! Same old crap, always get the jobs I don't want, rather the jobs I do want!

Here is what I had to endure last week with a company I'd applied for, no agency involved.
What you see below is verbatim:
Email 1 from them:
Following review of your c.v. we would like progress you application, can you please ley me know what your salary expectations are and your availability for an interview.
My reply:
Thanks for getting back to me and especially for the positive news!
My salary expectations are approximately £xxK which I understand this role being in that band. If that's not the case then please could you let me know the salary range.
Availability for an interview is very flexible as I'm currently not in employment
Email 2 from them:
Thanks for this I’ll be back in touch with dates
Email 3 from them (and yes they really did f
k up the template):
We appreciate your interest in [company name] and the time you’ve invested in applying for the above opening.
We ended up moving forward with another candidate, but we’d like to thank you for talking to our team and giving us the opportunity to learn about your skills and accomplishments
My reply:
Thanks for sending this through, although it has confused me somewhat.
I’ve not talked to any of the team and I’ve not had the opportunity to discuss my skills or accomplishments with anyone hence my confusion.
Is it just a standard template email sent in error or just a standard template email correctly sent to me, albeit a template which would normally be sent post-interview?
Email 4 from them:
Apologies for this it is a standard template and I’ve raised the issue so thanks for pointing it out.
Unfortunately the outcome is still the same we had an unprecedented response to the advert which is why it has taken a while to get back to you.
Email 5 from them:
We appreciate your interest in Sage and the time you’ve invested in applying for the above opening.
We ended up moving forward with another candidate, but we’d like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn about your skills and accomplishments
My reply:
Deja vu, Sharon. Good luck to the people who you moved forward with
An absolute f
king shambles from start to finish from a massive online software and accounting company.
Like you OP, I dodged a bullet.

You dodged a bullet. A long time back, but I found them to be awful. I went for pre-sales job and was sat down by one of the lead developers who asked me why I wanted to be a coder. We appreciate your interest in Sage and the time you’ve invested in applying for the above opening.

Before arranging an interview I would expect nothing.
After an unsuccessful interview there’s no point in the first instance in more than a generic: better luck next time someone else got it. If someone then asks for feedback it’s a courtesy any decent person would give but the content will largely be bulls
t and the outcome won’t be changing. Truth is they liked someone better and that happens to everyone at some point.
Another thing these days is some companies won’t allow their staff to give anything other than a template response.... These are the f
kers you can work years for to find out they’ll also refuse to do anything other than template responses to references when you move on, so as others said... you dodged a bullet.

If you apply and are not selected for interview I do not expect any reply, it's nice if you get it. I received one today for another role informing me an internal candidate was chosen, that tells me to avoid that company unless going via agency as their roles are likely to be given to people who already work there, as I know the company frequently take on temps.
But, if you are interviewed for a role, be it by phone or in person I think it is common courtesy to at least receive a thanks but no thanks fairly soon after, say a fortnight.
My presumption is that perhaps the HR dept (there is one) is swamped, their adverts are still there, with extended dates for another month, and they simply do not have the time to send out even group template acknowledgements. Or they simply do not bother to send out any responses to failed candidates.
I don't think I have ever been interviewed for a role and not had any kind of acknowledgement. And I have had plenty!
(Unless I have left the interview of my own accord obviously lol)

Whilst when asked I always would give feedback , the company I worked for and many other large companies do not encourage interviewers to give feedback.
Example of what they are scared of: Interviewer tells interviewee that his/her appearance at interview was not acceptable for the role. Interviewee sues citing Equality Act 2010.

I get your point drum.
My point was not about very specific feedback, more simply a yes or no you have the job.
I have sympathy with employers regarding this. I have been told I would be bored (surely something to raise in interview) and told I was too confident (says to me they want a dumb plodder who never says boo to a goose). I have also known people play the race cars, the age race and the gender card. And am also very aware of companies playing the non EU card too, (privately of course).
And also had very good feedback.
It depends on the firm..
But a sorry there were better applicants is surely the least you should accept!
As others have said, dodged a bullet I think.
