Received NIP

Received NIP in post today.....clean licence, not had any offences for years.

Camera (hand held speed gun) 10 days ago, 79mph in a 50mph (two lanes each way, near entrance to Manchester airport tunnel)

The guidelines have changed a lot since I was last done for anything. It would appear 6 points or a 7-56 day ban are the likely scenarios

Any ideas on current practice in Manchester which is more likely, a ban or points assuming there is no basis to fight it ?

Before you do anything google pepipoo. its a forum of people sick to death of being treated as a cash cow for minor infringements of sometimes stupid legislation, rules work both ways, and any procedural errors by the police or defective signage/road markings invalidates a ticket, worth a check.

Change of road type, is where change of speed limits usually are. In this case, getting closer to an airport expect:
Speed limit to drop
Lanes to increase, to ease congestion, and to route the traffic.
From what I understand the signs for 50 are there.

79/50 is way too fast for a course and too fast for a £100 fixed penalty. You should anticipate a SJPN within 6 months of the offence date.

You’ve correctly identified the most likely outcomes if you plead guilty at the SJPN stage. The fine imposed will be commensurate with your declared net weekly income.

Use Waze? Usually speed traps get reported so you can be warned up ahead. Your speed does seem a bit excessive for a 50 though, oops.

80mph is not even pushing it on that stretch of road, duel carriageway into a long tunnel with good visibility all the way, there is a huge difference between driving like an idiot and enjoying a bit of decent road when circumstances allow.

Sadly UK road laws don't allow this, or there would be occasions where you could do 100+ if the conditions were right but as it stands if it's 50 you have to be do that or under. I mean if you fancy a laugh or your chances you could stand up in court and say 80 isn't that fast for there in those conditions.

Make sure the NIP was received within the timeframe (14 days?) apart from that I don't think there's much you can do, may be lucky and get a 3 point fpn but it's too fast for a speed awareness course.

The 14-day rule is not working days and relies on the car being registered to you, right address blah, etc...

If a speed camera flashes at you on 1st Jan the NIP must be through your letterbox by midnight 15th Jan (so day one of fourteen in the 2nd Jan)?

So if it's posted on the 14th Jan and with you by midnight on the 15th Jan it is within the 14-day rule?

If it is posted on the 15th Jan and arrives on the 16th Jan it is too late?

A crash in a tunnel tends to be a lot more of a problem than one on a nice open stretch of road, especially when the tunnel runs under part of the runway / access to it. That’s probably why the speed limits are as low as they are, plus the fact that the tunnels were often full of the Cheshire set’s kidults in their Hyper-cars revving the nuts off them and causing all sorts of problems on what is a fairly major route off the M56.

If the OP wants to do 80 then it’s his choice and I can understand how easy it is to go well over the limit there, but just take the punishment. I’d expect anyone who can drive to know that 60% over the posted limit is going to be quite painful on the wallet and licence.

Consider yourself lucky they said it was 29mph over the limit and not 30 over.

Maybe occasionally look at your Speedo in future

What you have to keep in mind is that the Police know all these "decent bits of road" too. Easy pickings for them, and they'll think it's a nice result.

OP said it was a hand-held speed gun. Does the 14 day timing still apply?

Agree. If there was a crash in a tunnel, and a fire-tender had to attend, depending on the severity, maybe flights would be affected.
