O.K. on a lighter note I'm helping to organise a stag night in July.
There is aroughly 40 of us coming up from Devon on a coach, we are going to Glourious Goodwood for the racing and are then staying at the Travel Lodge Southampton as we can't get a hotel in Bournemouth.

Can't get hold of Shnozz at the mo so anyone else got any suggestions of where to go????

Bedford Place is the street full of "lively" studenty type bars and kebab outlets and For your eye only (the local lap dancing club).

Comedy club at other end of town - sort of, down by majority of other night clubs.

Is Southampton really that much of a draw for a stag night ?

Brighton is a similiar distance - they other way on the A27 or Pompey. I don't know Pompey (and the only good way to see it is in your rearview mirror I believe).

Southampton is OK, but I wouldn't have thought it a mecca for Stag do's.

Brighton is better choice (IMO) with decent selection of clubs and bars, but since you have 40 lads, I suggest stick with Southampton. I had a stag do in Brighton with around 12 lads, and it was a nightmare trying to get into bars/clubs (even if you split up) Those door nazis just radio through to all bars warning of your large group. Very annoying especially when we were a respectable bunch of lads, plus the meatheads they were allowing in instead of us!!

It wasn't my stag do or my choice of venue! LOL!!

You just have to keep to the right side of town and you wouldn't know it was the gay capital of England. ;-)

Eye - singular?! i.e. You for your one-eye only?

I know it's a typo but it really tickled me!

I would think Icon would be the best place for a large group of lads and is fairly close to the travel lodge.

errr....Closer???
Southampton's like one big pub nowadays. Personally I prefer the Oxford road end of town. FYEO is a laugh though.

Or Oxford street, good mix of bars and the casino at the end.

Stayed in a travel lodge in Bournemouth a while ago (well it was on the way to Christchurch) with the now ex girlfriend. Cost about £10 to get a taxi into Bournemouth itself.

As a Southampton resident I'm pig sick of the place and can't see why you'd want to head here on a stag do, but in any case here's some lowdown:

Pubs: Three distinct areas. London Road/Bedford Place is the current studenty/trendy area. The only large pub is Varsity (and Avondale House but it's a student haunt) and numerous smaller pubs and bars. Of note are Lizard Lounge, Mono's, Orange Rooms. Heading South there's a few pubs in the main shopping area, mainly the usual chain pub suspects which will be full of townies (Squares, Yates, Hogshead, Toad in the Park). Next stop is the Bargate, and below Bar area with Bar Risa, Walkabout and a Wetherspoons, along with a couple of smaller bars. Nearby is Oxford Street which is quite well to do and a good place for a bit of exotica spotting - not too hot on pubs though The Grapes and Dockgate 4 are worth a squizz. Bottom of town is Town Quay with a couple of restaurant/bar type places. Overall, none of these places are used to stag dos and you may have problems getting large groups of lads in. London Road area is the best bet as they are used to students.

Food: Some good curry houses around - Oxford Street has Kuti's and Poppadum Express (plus some other excellent restaurants if Indian isn't what you're looking for) POSH is near Oxford St. and is more colonial, but nice. Natraj is a good curry between London Road and Bedford Place, and is probably the best bet for a stag do. Holds "Curryoke" at weekends!

Clubs: Err, this is where is starts going Pete Tong. Southampton is a clubbing desert. Best suited for Stag do's is the Ikon/Diva warehouse type place at Leisure World (Diva is over 25's supposedly and you can get into Ikon as well.) but it's basically crap commercial housey stuff. London Road has Academy which is student only and Rhinos whose doormen are quite particular and probably wouldn't let a stag do in. Near the Guildhall around the back of Squares is the Soul Cellar which is funky but small and busy. Bargate has Jongleurs which opens into a club after the comedy. Bottom of town - La Margaritas opens into a club after they clear the restaurant tables away, and finally theres Venue which I've never been to but is a very towny/RnB type affair.

Lapdancing: Two to choose from. London Road has TUSK, Below Bar has FYEO. I don't really know about either of them.

Used to live in Portsmouth, and wouldn't really recommend there either.

Alternatively, you could hire a minibus and driver and head off to Bournemouth for the night! Brighton would also be a better bet.

Have fun!

Edited to add: 40 lads? I think you'll be hard pressed to get into anywhere in Southampton, bar the lap dancing clubs and a curry house. Possibly try phoning up Ikon beforehand to arrange a club. You'll have a very hard time in pubs.

Soton isn't the 1st place I'd choose for a stag night, I have to say. Been on a couple in Bournemouth that were ok.
