I am going to start minitwin racing next year and would like to get some real world cost figures. It will be with the bemsee group. I will be budgeting 3k for the actual bike i would just like to get a better idea of the cost of a race meeting and also how much things last/cost like tyres, brakes and other consumables.

Thanks in advance

Depends how fast you are or want to be.

Tyres need to be road legal so you could go Pirelli SC at £300 a pair or Avon 3D ultra sports at half that. You could also use scrubs.

Depends if you do test days too but you should get a minimum of three meetings out of a new set.

Brake pads in the scheme of things will cost you nothing.

I’d guess for a race weekend including entry you could do it for around £450 - £550 depending on the track not including your fuel getting there or breakdowns.

Did it with Bemsee more than a dozen years ago.

I fancied doing a season properly so I did every round, every Friday test session on the previous weekend's tyres and then every Saturday stuck a new set of boots on it and only started to scrimp at the end of the year. This has had a lasting effect as I never buy new tyres now despite knowing they are 2 or 3 seconds a lap.

We would enter the 2 Minitwin races per day and also did the Clubman 400 / 650 Challenge (not sure whether that still exists, something similar will) as well. Morning practice and 3 races per day is just about right, 2 races is too little and 4 races slightly too much (we got a 4 on a Sat and 2 on Sun at Lydden due to the Church rules even when trying to do our 3-a-day thing).

Entries, practice day, diesel for van (horrendous), petrol for bike and generator, tyres (comedy), pads, crash spares & fairings (variable), bike prep & improvement (gearing / suspension / spare wheels), beer / alcohol / wine / champagne, sandwiches, transponder, spare gloves for scrutineering / race support stuff (paddock matting / BBQ / cool boxes / gazebos / heaters etc).

All in all it worked out just under £1000 per weekend over 10 weekends but spread out in a way that made it almost bearable. With the increase in tyres & entries doing it this would definitely be over a grand now.

Doesn't include depreciation on the bike and whatever transport you sort out.

Depends obviously a lot on crashes on how the bike (and you) fall / roll. Out of the 40 odd that did our year no-one escaped a crash. I had 4 in total over the year (mostly Marquez stylee in practice) and that was well below the average.

Quite miss it (lots actually). Met great friends doing it that are still buddies today, makes road riding seem pointless, makes trackdays slightly unfulfilling, the first lap of a club race is the most absolutely awesome / most dangerous place you can put yourself in.

Seriously considering selling both my R1's to get an old SV for road & track fun - I love 'em. On most trackdays on a big bike you're eyeing up the 200 yard braking marker at the end of a reasonable straight, on a SV650 you're working out how much after the 100 yard marker you're going to brake - was into the 52s round Brands and 1m38s at Cadwell and struggle to get near those times on a trackday with a 170hp Superbike.

A mate who raced once said to me that he intended to become a millionaire through club racing.
I asked him how the funk he worked that one out.
"I started out as a multi-millionaire..." he replied...

What I have read so far seems to vary massively on cost. Some spend 1-2k per meeting some spend £500. Will probably just set a budget 4k for the year and race till that runs out might get 4 race weekends at 1 k each might get 8 at £500.

I do some racing with Bemsee and they’re good, really well run. Only downside is they do tend to cram a lot of races in which means you don’t get many laps per race.

I’m not so sure how much the consumables on Minitwins are, or what tyre wear is like but on average this is what I budget for a weekend

Entry fees and test day - £450
Tyres (2 sets) - £650
Fuel for bike - £100
Fuel for van - £100
Food etc for weekend - £75

Probably don’t need to use 2 full sets of tyres but I do and then use them as scrubs on track or test days after

The other major expense that never seems to go away is crash damage and buying spares for just in case. Then also the other kit you’ll need to take with you, like awning, genny etc

Worth every penny though!
