As the title says, please help me choose a new PC game.

I used to play a lot of games, but my interest has lapsed. Don’t know if it time pressures or tiredness. But I miss the genuine excitement I used to have.

I like linear story driven games....a lot of modern games seam to turn in to big to do lists. I have enough going on in real life that I don’t need a game to give me a list of mundane tasks & choices. Not sure if its rose tinted specs but older games where a lot more linear & I think as a result more immersive in the story.

Off the top of my head & without that much thought, here is a list of games Ive really enjoyed over the years; all the Monkey Island games, the very first Call of Duty, first Max Payne, the Getaway, Half Life 2, Vice City, Halo, Oblivion, Americas Army (Bridge), Battlefield 2 & even a few hours on Rust.

I have got Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 in my steam library. Great games but it been so long since I last played them, I won’t remember where the hell I am or what I’m doing. Did enjoy Rust for a decent amount of hours & have played Subnautica through which was quite good.

Not sure I’ve got the time needed for an RPG or online games. I did get a PS4 with the new call of duty last year, but found it very dull for some reason. Maybe my gaming fun is a lost cause! hahaa

  • edit to add - have even enjoyed RTS games like command & conquer, sim city, & even minecraft briefly. Maybe a new take on those would be worth a try.

GTA5?

Red dead redemption 2 isn’t on pc yet but that would be a good one to add for future whenever it comes out.

Far cry games are good too as is ghost recon wildlands.

Assasisns creed latest two are good if you like that kind of thing.

Have you played all the addons for half life 2?

I’m in a similar situation to you in many ways. Going back 10-15 years I’d think nothing of marathon gaming sessions morning through to late night. But these days I struggle to get into them in the same way. Might dip in for an hour or 2, sometimes a little more if I get hooked, but never in the way I used to.

It’s probably a little ironic, as I remember when younger wishing for more options/control/functionality/complexity from games at the time (champ manager, civ 2, sim city, etc) but now it’s here I can’t be arsed hehe

In terms of recommendations, If you’re looking for something fairly linear which doesn’t actually feel linear then the Deus Ex series is worth a shout. Although dated the original is awesome, probably up there as one of my favourite ever games. The later ones are just as good. It feels open world but it’s actually not and keeps you fairly focussed on the story.

Cities skylines has taken the mantel of city building games these days. Again worth a shout if you enjoy that sort of thing. Loads of YouTube videos on how to play, some of the creations on there are absolutely amazing and so lifelike, but don’t feel that’s the only way to play. It’s good entertainment whatever path you go down.

Other suggestions for something a bit different (recommended by PHers) would be Portal 1 & 2. Also Inside and Limbo.

Had GTA 5 when it was first released.

Would get Red Dead if I had a PS4, did consider buying one again last night for it.

Will check the others out.

Im not the only one then Zetec-S! Ive had some great weekends in the past stocking up on supplies and binging a new game all weekend. But its probably been 10 year or more since Ive managed it. Will check out Cities skylines.

I remembered some other games I really enjoyed, Mafia, Alan Wake & Dishonored.

So Im considering Disonored 2, Wolfenstien 2, A Plague Tale, Surviving Mars and for some reason really intrested in Football Mananger 2019 & Tropico 6!

I assumed you would have played gta5.

If you do get a PS4 then I’d recommend days gone, reviews were a bit mixed but I think it’s great, not quite finished it yet.
I actually bought a used PS4 for that game and couple of the other exclusives, normally Xbox and pc only but got a bargain so couldn’t resist, might be worth looking at used ones if you fancy it.

If you like classic games check out www.gog.com
Lots of good stuff on there including the Lucas arts classics etc, the benefit of gog is you get a DRM free installer meaning you don’t need keys so can install it multiple times on multiple computers.
Also the steam sale is on going now in case you weren’t aware, could get some bargains.

I would also recommend cdkey websites where you buy the key for steam etc, Ive used quite a few and no problems so far and always cheaper (sometimes by a fair amount)

Did you ever play the dungeon keeper series? One of my favorite classic ones, there is a newer dungeons series which is based on that kind of, they are usually cheap and a great series if you like that kind of thing.

Eta - forgot to mention, sign up at epic games and you get a free game every two weeks or so, first one was subnautica, but others are more Indy like games but some good ones so far.

If you have the time for Fallout 4 then get Skyrim - but it WILL cost you hours... and hours..... and maybe a few days...

Another to mention would be Ark: Survival Evolved, I was addicted to this for quite a while, it’s kind of like rust with dinosaurs that you can tame and ride around on.

I really enjoyed going back through and playing BioShock remastered and BioShock 2. Couldn't recommend them enough once you get into them. I had missed them out the first time round.

Skyrim is amazing but it will give you the long to do list that you mention you don't want.

Dishonored 2. Definitely feels similar to the first one.

I very much enjoyed the modern "Prey" game. I played on hard and it made me really think of how to use the limited resources I had and what to spend them on and how that would suit or adapt my playstyle.

I'm very much enjoying Rage 2 at the moment, post apocalyptic FPS with elements of mad max (driving), RPG and open world stuff.
Not a big fan of open world generally but this is just enough to be interesting without that "where am I and what am I supposed to be doing" element.
Shooting combines with bioshock/dishonoured type powers. It looks amazing.

Papers, Please sounds boring but isn't. Play a border guard, let people in if they meet the requirements.

Edit - Actually Mad Max is great fun. Vehicle combat and Batman(arkham) style combat.

If you like RTS Age of Empires 2 has a rapidly growing community on Voobly. Though even the beginner lobby isn't exactly 'beginner'.

There is going to be a full remaster out at the end of the year which looks promising.

Going back a bit but the Batman Arkham series is worth a look if you have never played them.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.

The amount of games available is damn overwhelming, so I’ve wasted a few days just looking at games.

Recently added to the shortlist where

Murdered: Soul Suspect
Watch Dogs 2
Just Cause 4
Rage 2
ARK
Forstpunk
Prey
Dishonored 2
Cities: Skylines
Wreckfest

LA Noire was another game I remember really liking.

But after failing to get excited about any gun play games Ive purchased a slightly odd ball game Tropico 6.

Purchased from cdkey & might get Dishonored 2 & Prey as well tomorrow at they are only £6.99 on cdkeys. (thanks for the heads up on that site to whoever mentioned it on the steam sale thread)

Fingers crossed I can get in to it as I’m sort of on gardening leave at the moment & mind numbingly bored.

You could try something different and play lesbian misery simulator Life is Strange, or something similar to that format.

You sound similar to me (OP). It sounds mad but try PUBG.

You can dip in and outs but wow is it fun, hard, intense, incredibly satisfying, incredibly frustrating.

Btw. I LOVED subnautica. Was a sad day I finished it.

Have you played the Mass Effects? ME1 popped up as a freebie on my Xbox a few weeks ago and I've enjoyed replaying it almost ten years later, making very different choices this time.

As a quick game, I quite like World of Tanks, and I'm perfectly happy playing at the lower levels without spending any money.

And I adore Kerbal Space Program(me) which has a lengthy thread on here.

Rimworld - Colony simulator where you build your own town and defend it, trading with others etc. The vanilla game is good enough and very deep, but if that cant satisfy you there are literally hundred of thousands of mods from small tweaks to entire game changing mods.

I mentioned CD key websites above in my reply here, cdkeys.com is one of the better ones but worth checking allkeyshop.com as it searches a few CD key sites and gives best prices for each game, CDkeys.com is often near the top though but not always.

Command and Conquer series is very good if you like RTS types, I've replayed them loads of times now.

I think you might enjoy Wolfenstein: The New Order and it's sequel Wolfenstein II: The New Collossus.
Also Deus Ex Human Revolution, and the Bioshock series.
