GDPR Issue?

I am not normally the type to get all upset about GDPR, but something has raised an issue today.

Let us say that a business with whom you have had dealings (car servicing in this case) loses or otherwise gives up its franchise, then give your details to another business, not in the same group, but another franchise of the same manufacturer.
I don't have any 'bad history' to hide, but I do think that the original dealer should have asked for consent to transfer my details. I have less issue if I had an email from the manufacturer telling me that *they* had transfered my details to a new franchise.

Maybe, maybe not. Would depend on a whole host of issues.

When you signed up to service agreement who was listed as data controller? Franchise or manufacturer?

Do they have lawful reason to process data to maintain service records for their cars for warranty?

If you are unhappy with the data being with the new franchise ask the data controller to delete your information under the right to be forgotten.

But does it actually cause you any practical issue?

Whatever form you filled out with your details or something you signed probably had small print. It will likely have said they can share any of your data with any partner or affiliated business.

Assuming the new franchise acts in good faith, I agree.

What if they sell their data on to third parties?

...but all those garages / manufacturers must think GDPR is "a thing" otherwise they would release the cars service history to new owners?
