Noticed a misfire under light throttle whilst stuck in traffic yesterday, and thought the most likely cause was split coil packs.

Sure enough after removing one this morning that's the issue, I've only had them replaced once in 13 years, when the car was around 4 years old so they've done well.

It doesn't throw up the CEL and as I'd got a road trip to Scotland and Europe coming up, was glad I noticed before hand.

Easy enough to access them for removal:

Sure enough they were cracked:

Despite being the same as a BERU coil pack for the Cayenne, they have a 980 part number and the level of 'tax' for that:

And a gratuitous 'money shot' of the engine room:

Sorry to hear that!

Mine were cracked and replaced at the major service last year.

Sorry to hear that JC. Hopefully it can get sorted quickly and she’ll be back @ a track soon.

Easy fix T, 30 minutes DIY to swap them out, then she'll be fit for action. The good folk at Reading should have stock.

Mine had to be replaced last year as well. Does seem more age related than miles related. I don't know what mileage JC's CGT has. My own is 2600 miles

10 coil packs at 34k miles when 8 years old to coincide with 2nd major. Then a further 2 at 41k when 12 years old at third major.

Current mileage 44.5k. But I see JC is catching up rapidly so its fortunate I'm off to Swtizerland in it on Friday. beer

On a related point, how easy is it to detect a single cylinder misfire at idle on the V10? I'm not confident I could spot it in amongst the general racket at idle.

I’m trying :-)
Got a trip to the Highlands in a few weeks then Europe in September so should be getting closer.

Regarding a misfire, I noticed it on very light throttle in second and third gear in traffic, just as you get slightly on the gas you could feel it missing and it was hesitant to accelerate.

I’m going to replace all 10 as they are around the same age.

The lifespan is pretty good, certainly better than on the contemporary 996, and most definitely better than on the turbo!

I wonder how susceptible they are to excessive use of sawtooth corner kerbs. wink

I would always advise the coils to be replaced if cracked one CGT had an engine loom fire because they were not replaced. The coil unit is exactly the same as the Cayenne coil as someone has said you now just have a 980 part number and are changed a premium.

I noticed this interesting snippet earlier in the week and my immediate thought was “I wonder when we’ll have that issue with our Cayenne?” Said Cayenne was in for a major service at the time and I got a call the following day “Sir, we are just replacing the spark plugs and have discovered ....”. You can guess the rest biggrin

(My second thought was that the engine bay of your CGT is a work of art!)

The Porsche 980 'Tax' is strong with this one!

Around £24.00 each for the Cayenne version, £89.00 for the GT ones each, as much as I adore the GT, this does smart a bit.

Despite the 980 tax, you know that feeling of anticipation when your car is about to come back from Reading and you can drive it again?

That’s how I am right now smile

It is indeed a great feeling!

I found the issue with the coil packs myself, new ones arrived yesterday from the good folks at Reading so a job for this evening at home.

I can only imagine that feeling!

I'm excited enough to get my little GT3 back from having the stone chips painted out of the rear bumper.

Gulp. And that's why looking at the service invoice I'm always glad to see as few 980.XXX numbers. Parts sharing is a good thing!
