Some diagnostic help required please...

I have a 997.2 2010 Carrera 2S. Recently the car has been struggling a little to start. Since I have owned the car it normally starts within a second of the key turn, but recently it has been taking a few seconds of starter motor before it fires. If I turn it off once warm and restart it is back to being almost instant.

Yesterday morning it struggled to start and then misfired for a few seconds before stalling. I tried again and this time it started, chugged a bit as before but with a little throttle encouragement it recovered and ran as normal. No dash lights, no smoke or smells, no signs of a problem at all. I went for a short very tentative drive and all seemed well.

Now I have done a bit of internet research and there seem to be stories of coil packs being a common cause of misfire but symptoms aren't quite like mine with the issue only at start. I have also considered whether this could just be poor fuel (I'm not sure when it began but could be just this last tank full and the tank is now pretty low).

Firstly, I assume it is ok to drive carefully as longs as it feels like it is running normally? I'd like to top up the fuel and if that doesn't help it will be going to my local Porsche indy - I don't fancy paying for a pickup but recognise it is cheaper than an engine rebuild!

Thoughts and opinions please.Thanks.

Coil packs are probably most likely, as you say. They can manifest problems in different ways too. If you cannot see any evidence of them having been changed, they're probably the first, most logical port of call as they need to be done once in a while anyway.

My 997.1 had a power loom fail. This, if I understood correctly, is a cable which runs from the battery in the frunk, to the electrickery in the engine. It is a 'known' issue. Hopefully it's not this as there's a bit more to it than coil packs!

I have the same car as the OP
Ocassionally, more random I'd say, mine does the sameISH It does not misfire , it seems to 'struggle' ( splutters?) for a moment then all is fine.
Usually this happens if it has been standing for a while ( mine is not a daily driver) and this is often after a wash and put away for next drive.
Like you, no dash lights. And it's fine within seconds
I only use premium fuel.
Good luck in your search

This afternoon I spoke with my usual indy garage who suggested this sounds like the High Pressure Fuel Pump issue.

Having now googled for this fault it does sound very much like the symptoms I am experiencing.

I've learnt that there was a recall on 997.2s for the High Pressure Fuel Pump in 2011 and it seems many were replaced free of charge although I'm unsure if it was for all cars or just some.

My car is not in Porsche warranty anymore but I was wondering if anybody had experience of good-will recalls in this kind of scenario? I think it is pretty unlikely given my car is no longer even serviced by OPC but I plan to try my luck. Much to my surprise there seem to be forum stories of HPWPs being replaced for out of warranty cars in the past couple of years for a 2011 recall.

If not it's looking like a big kick in the wallet! yikes

This sounds sort of similar to some issues I had with my 997.2. My only advice would be to make sure that they have properly investigated the issue and what needs to be replaced before you go ahead with anything. I started with Battery and Fuel Pump relay, then Fuel Pump and then finally it was the ECU which needed to be replaced. Apart from Battery it was all under warranty so I was lucky, but if I was paying I would have been up for thousands!

I would introduce yourself over at 911uk.com and ask the question.

I have been told I have the High Pressure Fuel Pump on my 997.2 appears to have a minor fault. The dealer has suggested I replace it if it gets worse. He did however state it could last for a long time before it finally gives up. On the basis I believe he is correct. Has any one replaced the pump relatively cheaply?
