Spitting oil from exhaust!

I've noticed in recent weeks that when I start the engine (450, 58000miles) from cold, it seems to spray droplets of oil onto the tarmac from the exhaust. It does not seem as obvious when the engine is warm or after a run. Also think it is using a bit more oil than previously.
Thanks for any advice as I'm a bit worried...

Are you completely sure it's oil and not just soot mixed with a bit of water?

bobfrance is on the same thoughts as I had.. water mixed with soot.. that big exhaust sure does get condensation in it. nothing to worry about if that is the case (and if it was oil, you'd smell it burning when the engine warmed up)

Not necessarily so!! I had a Chim that was burning 3 litres of oil every 1,000 miles. No smoke & no smell!!

So in essence what you're saying is you DIDN"T have two smoking barrels?

Yes but that sort of quantity isn't enough that you'd see it being spat out of the tailpipes though is it..? In isolation I can understand that you did not smell oil burning in your situation, but if there was enough oil in the exhust that it was spitting it out of the back as well then I really do think you'd smell it.

Jeez... what was it doing..? Pissing it out of the sump..?

Had the sump on mine re-sealed at the last service... seems to drink less oil these days.. oh, and the drive is a bit cleaner too

I've seen this in a dealership when starting a Grif. A bit more right foot soon clears the problem! But unlike the dealership, don't do it 3 foot from a white wall!!!

I'd go with the soot/condensation. Put some on a strip of paper and try to light it with a match. Oil will be very smokey, soot/condensation will probably splutter out or burn slowly.

Mine does this, but only since i had the cats and baffles removed, and it is just sooty water - oil would have burned off in the engine

Mine has done this also, was about 200 yards from home after blasting down a nice fat 40mph road, down into 3rd and a huge POP from the rear. Got home, parked up, and noticed speckles of soot on the tarmac behind the car.

It hasn't done it since, I just presumed that the engine hiccuped.

The car had the wrong rings fitted from new. Apparently Mobil 1 is capable of burning without smoke!

(and yes, I was 2 Non Smoking Barrels )
