How long for signs of cracking in the paint?

Sorry to hear that.... the quickest place to notice is the base of the "c" pillar just at the back of the boot edge. This is a stress point and often cracks even with the lightest knock.
Also there are the bumper creases just at the rear/lower part of the wheel arches. You'll probably find a hairline crack running in the mould crease.
These are easily cured and can be used as evidence to insurance to strip and re-spray the entire back end (need to do this to get the paint to match, due to locations of the 4 points and the 5th impact point) even with a small bump. Should pick up most of the tab to get a 100% job. Best of luck with the repair.
