Reliable 4 door auto for max 5k
Discussion
So I'm considering an auto 1.8 petrol civic as a commuter/sensible car....
I'm after a cheapish 4 door auto that i can fit kids seats in the back, will take me the short journey to train station without complaining and cope with longer motorway commutes if necessary (especially into cities hence auto).
Ideally I want to be able to replace the audio/tech so I can get DAB/android auto etc if not standard.
Any other options I should be looking at? Aware that auto's aren't always the most reliable things at the age I'm likely to be looking at.....

At this price point it's very hard to look past the Astra in Elite trim it's a very good car.

Thanks for the response, not something I'd considered so I'll take a look. Initial reaction would be a bit slow for dodging idiots on the motorway etc.
I've been following a few of these threads and see you've mentioned the Giulietta a few times. Realise I'd need to spend a bit more money to get an auto but might be worth it for the extra 70bhp for daily if the auto is reliable.

It has an adequate amount of go but you do have to work them hard, the Alfa is a very good pick but as you say you'll have to up the budget by around £1500.00 to get a good one:

Also don't discount the Focus in 2.0 form:

Or the Mazda3 (which is the same platform as the Focus above:

Now if you're upping the budget then as nice as everything above is then I'd be buying the Mondeo 2.0T in Titanium X Sport:

Or Titanium X

As good as those smaller hatches are you get a better overall car in comparison & they're around the same age.
Somewhere in between is the Lexus IS250:
