My wife has stolen my Swift Sport - a cracking old school warm hatch, which cost a mighty £880.

I'd like a 5 door replacement up to £2500

Must be small and fun around the lanes, old stuff welcome.

my swift reminded me of my old mk2 golf gti. you could try one of them if you fancy. good fun and easy to work on, also if the engine goes bang, lots of resource about to put a 1.8T engine in. the other standard answer is obvs a clio 182, but 3 doors only. 5 doors you might stretch to a mk5 gti?

If you can live with less doors I'd suggest the Mk6 Fiesta ST, great fun car on back roads and more than holds its own on A roads too

Yes me too that's why I like it - small, light not too fast so I can enjoy revving the wotsits off it

To "upgrade" I'd want 5 doors really otherwise I'd get a Civic R

Mk5 Golf i a good suggestion but really I wanted a smaller, lighter, fun car.

Why are all the warm hatches 3 door ?

The swift up from the one we have comes in 5 door btw, but 2x swifts is slightly excessive.

I personally would hunt down a tidy MG ZR, but if you can live without the sporty styling, a 1.6 petrol Fiesta will be a good steer.

Also, check out the following:
Fast Daihatsu Sirions
Micra 160SR
Fast Mitsubishi Colts
Mazda 2 1.5 Sport
Toyota Yaris T Sport/SR

Yes my first thought but they seem to start at £4k which is too much for the minimal mileage it will do

Panda 100HP? 5 doors surprisingly practical, would be a bit slower than the Swift however

Thanks but after checking out all the suggestions it becomes obvious why I bought the Swift.

I'll stick with 3 doors and get another Swift
