BMW M6 for sale (EML on)
Discussion
Morning to all;
Can anyone advise on this M6 which is for sale?
Obviously it is cheap for a reason however has anyone had a similar solenoid related issue? Going in with eyes open does it have the potential to be a big bill to rectify?

If it's one or more of the VANOS solenoids the S85 has 4 of them and they're now about £1000 each from BMW.
The garage are happy for inspection and code reading etc so saying it is just one of 2 solenoids is it a case that if they have gone the others will likely too and is it better to do all at once, do they have a operating life?If it is all 4 and (just that) for the money to repair them I wonder if the car is priced too high...
Always wary of adverts for cars like this
Why not replace the faulty parts if they know what the problem is - sell for a lot more than they have it currently for sale at and use the newly replaced (and expensive) items as a positive selling point
I'm in the market for an M6 and have completely dismissed that car for the above reasons

Did you speak with the seller about it? I just did and they said the reason they aren't fixing it is that it was taken in P-Ex and they are a Porsche dealer so don't wish to get involved.... They "indicated" that this should be a £14k car, but that means that even with the faults they must have given £6-7K in P-Ex. They also said that they have estimates of £2.5K for repair - either this is a figure plucked out of the air or they know more about how many solenoids have gone etc.... I am waiting for a call from a specialist indy on a worse case scenario basis where all solenoids needs replacing. I'll update when they reply.,Why not replace the faulty parts if they know what the problem is - sell for a lot more than they have it currently for sale at and use the newly replaced (and expensive) items as a positive selling point

I had one of these E63 M6's for around 1.5 years. It was nothing but a painful ownership experience. In the end when I fully sorted it out, I completely fell out of love with it.
I never had the EML light come on but it could be the VANOS - a high pressure VANOS pipe was replaced on mine under warranty. They had the car for 2 weeks and said it required a full front end strip down. The bill to the warranty company was allegedly over £7000 so I was told at dealership prices.
Or it could be throttle actuators. These were also replaced on mine and were not cheap either.
Alternatively, it could be related to the clutch. I remember once the clutch completely went on mine on the motorway, the orange cog kept coming on (not the red cog of red, weirdly) and kept bonging. The EML light also illuminated and my revs were restricted to around 4000rpm. A new clutch, flywheel and clutch position sensor completely cured the problem and then the actuators were also replaced for good measure (and I believe the SMG pump too from memory). Mega bill from what I can recall.
From what it looks like in that picture, it genuinely could be any/all of those issues.
They are VERY expensive to fix and most repairs will run into £1000+
My advice - stay away unless you have deep pockets and are into financial S&M.

Some good experiences there - the indy garage quoted £874 each for the solenoids so £3.5K + VAT + Fitting.
Realistically for this car to be viable and crossing fingers that the solenoids are the only issue the car needs to be priced at £6k or so i think. The MOT has expired and it won't pass one with the EML on plus you can't test it properly....
Interesting to look into but like others have said potential for big bills!
You can get other solenoids that appear to be ok, but who knows.
Some parts aren't too bad money wise to repair, but it depends on your disposition. You can get throttle actuators repaired with a life time warranty for not that much. There are a lot of alternative fixes for these cars now that weren't around back in the day so it is less of an financially.
Would I buy this? No.

And it was serviced by BMW within the last 100 miles, back in June. Surely a good move would be to see what dealer carried out the work and have a chat with them. The issue would have been present then and recorded.
I do find it strange that the narrative doesn't discuss the reason for the issue, but it does work hard to point it out via images though.
