I find myself in a predicament: job sees me commuting in via motorway followed by London driving (non- ULEZ). i do c. 15k/yr. I get 45p/mile for business use but no car allowance until next year.

I used to buy whatever i fancied at the time but now using my car everyday I find myself struggling to settle for anything. I recently bought a golf 1.6tdi its very good on the motorway, does 60mpg BUT it lacks any character what so ever and i find the chair uncomfortable.

my ideal criteria:
auto
30mpg+ on a run
quick-ish (golf feels slow)
a decent steer
good on the motorway

In my searches it seems to be mainly Hot hatches, BMW's and Merc's that are catching my eye but i do have concerns over german reliability.

I've given myself a few options:

1.) keep the golf and buy a street triple.
2.) spend 5k (cash) on something fun and forget a few ideal criteria
3.) spend c.15k (bank loan) on a 3 yr/old motor like a 320d M-sport
4.) spend c.15k on whatever car i like the most and enjoy it for a year before company allowance dictates something like option 3.

I would be looking at something like this:

Quick, 30 mpg +, looks great (IMO) and I don't think that engine has any major issues but maybe get a warranty for peace of mind.

I am conflicted... I started a thread (and quickly deleted) asking about sensible daily drive.

Struggling a bit here as I prefer Japanese cars but an auto type r doesn't exist.

Type of car is no so much of an issue but I do like the ability to carry passengers when needed.

I only went with this so my answer is not wholly practical, but how about a Toyota Aristo, sportier than a Lexus, just got to find one without the usual tat added...

Toyota Crown with a hybrid?

Nissan Fuga/Infiniti M with a hybrid

Octavia vRS? Can get it with a DSG, which is nice autobox.

But you are limiting your options wanting an auto in that price range. Does it have to be auto?

Because I'd probably look at an EP3 Type R with your budget. Ticks all the other boxes.

Going to see an m135i tomorrow. I love these things and have been considering my position and it might be a now or never to buy and run something like this. (As per option 4)

M135i is a good option & a good steer, don't discount the 335i either as they handle as well & for me are the better car:
