Photocard renewal 5 years and not 10 years.

I got my car licence in 1999 and renewed the photo in 2009.

It has come around to renew again and I did it online through www.gov.uk and paid £14.

It has arrived today after applying on 7th July (very speedy) and it is only for five years.

Section 4a 07/07/2019
Section 4b 06/07/2024.

I'll be calling DVLA tomorrow but I'm wondering if anybody has had this before.?????

It might be because of HGV entitlement and I'm under 45.

Me too, until 2021 - though I'm planning on hiring a car in Cuba later this year for which I think it would be prudent to have a photocard licence so might change early.

I still have my first red book licence issued in 1969, found it tucked away in a drawer a few months ago. Made me come over all nostalgic.

Me too! and every paper one in between until I hit 70 and had to go plastic.

It hits home how we are getting old,but at least we have experienced the best times in motoring. It''s all going downhill from a pure enjoyment point of view.

Had never heard of a speed camera or congestion charges or emissions charges when I started driving, and if you were pulled over for speeding as I was several times, you were given a polite telling off, told to be careful and sent on your way to do it again

Absolutely agree that 70's were good times to drive.

Night rallies etc - 180 mile thrash round the lakes, over 100 cars competing on Motoring News events, with not a policeman in sight.
Hundreds of spectators, all watching for free.

As mentioned, no speed cameras, seems that by todays standards, hardly any rules either!

Called the DVLA and because I'm between 35 and 45 they have done 5 years. Looks like i will sort out the licence and hgv medical in 5 years.

Thought it may help someone in the same situation.

I have to renew my photo in Feb next year. No problem BUT I then have to renew my licence in April when I hit the ripe old age of 70..... Joined up thinking - NOT - springs to mind.
Ans I bet I'll get charged for both...

I finally gave in this year as I hire a car most holidays. It was only a matter of time before it's validity got questioned. It also saves carrying a passport where you need photo ID.

It's every three years after you hit 70 and is free - I hope, I'll let you know in November.

That's why I changed mine. I used to go on holiday to the US frequently so it was easier to just get a photo card licence.

It is. I had a medical restricted one, until 70. That was free too.

If certain members of the EU had their way, and we stayed in , we would all be doing renewals every five years .
As it stood with licence , CPC , Digi card , ADR and CRB ,Fork lift renewals , things could get expensive . I'm glad it's just the photocard next year and the licence in 2025 these days due to health problems.

If I had my way, it would a limited re-test every five years, including a theory test to ensure people are up to date with new legislation.

So do we, it was our recent trip to Florida that prompted me to get it done. I always have my wallet with me, but not my passport. It came in handy when we wanted to hire some jet skis and they have age related rules.

Probably. Next renewal will probably be free. I received a refund cheque with mine.
