Hi Guys,

I have done a massive amount of research on what is the best option for upgrading the audio system in the 991 only using factory locations to allow for a full return to stock, while also not adding a huge amount of weight.

I also considered a 10” sub in the footwell but am leaning towards a 3way active system with almost 9” woofers in the doors.

The one thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on a pretty costly job is that I want to ensure I can fit the same speakers into a 992.

Can someone please confirm if the speaker sizes in the doors are the same size in a 992?

This would allow for me to enjoy these speakers for many years to come.

Best Speakers Available for Factory Locations:
Dynaudio Esotar 430

Morel Elate Ti MW9

Dynaudio Esotec tweeter md102 (there is also the option to order the oem Upgraded Burmeister ribbon tweeter)

Mosconi One Amp (fits in place of the oem amp under the seat)

If anyone can confirm the speaker sizes in the 992 that would be a massive help and I will share all information I can.

For those of you about to say “lower the windows” and “exhaust is all I need”, please keep in mind I really enjoy great tunes while pushing a car and hearing her scream. Great music is also makes traffic far more pleasant. To each their own.

Door Woofers (Morel):

Are you planning to do the install yourself, or have it done for you?

I think you also need to check the tweeter location in the 992 (something makes me think it might be different to the 991, so the Musicar/Dynaudio MD102 tweeter solution may not drop-in without modification.

Also, be careful with door depth with a 9" unit (I have no knowledge on whether it will fit, diameter wise, by the way); I suspect you will need some spacer rings to mount it away from the door surface.

And what amplification are you thinking of? Space under the driver seat is available but is somewhat limited. But at least you can pick up the speaker feeds/wiring from that area.

Good luck with this!

Hi James,
No, I have a great installer to do the work.

Amp will be the Mosconi One 8 channel so it can be an active setup with ample power for 9” drivers. The mosconi fits in the same space as the oem amp as it is what Musicar use.

Seems like a lot of work but guess lots of traffic in London so plenty of time to use it,on full chat surely it's the engine sounds driving

Ah yes, I think I recall that. I presume it's the 60W per channel model, with integrated DSP (which I think is very helpful when setting up in these cars)? Good that it is ClassA/B rather than Class D which I went with and sort of, kind of regret...

I presume you'll be using factory-fresh Dynaudio tweeters? If you go the Musicar route, remember that their mods include the addition of a first-order high-pass filter which is potted into the back of the tweeter; you (or your installer) may want to undo that given the configurability of the DSP amp.

Keep us posted - please update here on what you find, how it goes and so on.

James

Edited to clarify that it is the Musicar tweeters that have an integrated filter.

Yes, James it has 60w per channel.

Yes the tweeters will be fresh from Dynaudio, so I will make sure the installer knows to undo the high pass filter.

Thank you!

I just need to get confirmation if the same speakers can fit in the 992. Once confirmed things will be ordered straight away.

Sorry - my bad; I meant to say: if the tweeters come from Musicar then they will have the filter already integrated. Box-fresh units from Dynaudio will not, of course, and will be good to go with the DSP amp.

Sorry for the confusion.

I assume you're retaining the PCM head unit, to maintain OEM appearance?

Yes and I went with the base oem sound system so there are no fibre issues

Are you replacing a Burmester or lower spec offering?

Burmeister isn’t an option in the GT cars. I went for the base system so upgrading would be easier.

When you say "base system", do you mean CDR31 (ie: base audio with integrated 2 x 25W amplification, only tweeters and 6" woofers, and no nav) or 'base nav PCM' which, if I recall correctly, has the ASK 7 channel amplifier mounted under the driver seat, and has mid-range speakers and larger woofers as well as the tweeters?

There are several permutations and starting points here!

Base Nav PCM and yes you are correct on its configuration bud.

Great starting point as you have all of the key wiring (high-level outputs from PCM; feeds to the door and dash speakers) already installed and accessible from the under-seat area.

Will watch out for updates.

Good project & please get the guy to take some pics & update. Or do it yourself! It's not that hard.
Since the Burmeister option became available I've seen few people upgrading 991s and on.
The Bose system in the 9X7 cars really is dreadful and lots of threads from owners replacing them. I ripped it out of 2 of my cars and replaced completely, did one of them myself. Also did my R8 myself too, fabricated speaker rings etc was a really fun project & massive improvement over the B&O system & that was with middle of the range equipment from Rainbow & Hertz.
Look forward to seeing some pics & good luck with it

Thank you! Given a slight delay in the delivery of my car the system install will start early September.

My only debate is whether I should go with a 10” JL TW3 sub in the passenger footwell or go with the Morel 9” door woofers.
http://www.jlaudio.co.uk/10tw3-d4-car-audio-tw3-su...

I am slightly concerned the Morels won’t have enough authority. They are substantially lighter than the JL.
I enjoy house music when driving fast, along with some hip hop and a good amount of old school rock.
