What would you do - 25k?

I have 25k to spend on a car. The only ask is : Auto + Fast.

I hear the engine and chassis in the GTR is a lightly modded version of the Bluebird's so I entirely agree.

An early (05-on) Aston V8 Vantage?
I think you can get the autos from then, it'll hold value better..

Or Jaguar XKR 5.0 ?
Maserati GT ?
Mercedes SL 55 ? SLK 55 (later model)?

In an almost identical position and narrowed it down to a CL63, V8 Vantage and XK R - discounted the M6 as the potential for silly bills is just too high

Current front runner (with a budget of 28k) is a V8 Vantage, apart from clutches they are pretty much bulletproof

Not entirely... I believe they've overhauled the auto box from the Bluebird and it's a lot smoother in the GTR.

To disregard Japanese cars due to some kind of bluebird memory is a bit like deciding to never listen to music again because you once heard "Barbie girl" on the radio.....although if it was an auto i was after i'd probably get a TTRS or RS3 (Thats a lie, i'd actually probably probably try and build an 80's VAG car with a TTRS/RS3 drivetrain, something like an old Audi coupe/mk2 scirocco/Corrado if it was me.....but if i was a bit more normal/sensible/sane etc. that would be my choice......as a big japanese fan, i find the 5 cylinder Audi lump, and how well they launch themselves down the road pretty spectacular)

Firstly the 911S is fast but unless your driving the N/A hard it will not feel that fast vs the others

The CL63 only has 4 seats the middle rear isn’t a seat as the infotainment etc is in the way

Merc sat nav isn’t the best nor is the jags vs a bmw of same era IMHO.

Surely sound comes into this choice that’s a personal choice.


You could always go F10 M5 too.

M6 and C63 are still heavy and pretty boring cars with the engine in the wrong place with the merit of being at the top of the tree.

If you want a GT car due to age or whatever get one of them.

For everything else the 911. Still special and yet practical.

V8 Vantage doesn't feel fast - particularly the 4.3s. Personally, I still prefer the drive of the Vantage to a 911 though.

Also, be careful of "bulletproof". You are looking at cars that were very expensive when new, and even "bulletproof" cars can need stuff fixing, even if the engine goes forever - and 911s and Aston won't have particularly cheap repairs.

I out pulled one in my standard m135i. The Aston looked better, sounded better and is a lot more special. They are a gorgeous design. Still though, not being able to beat a standard hatch would smart.

Ford Mustang GT ??

2016 models floating around from mid-£20K upwards. Five litre Coyote engine with 400 plus bhp.

Earlier S197 models to consider with big supercharger usually impeccably maintained by enthusiast owners will give you 500 plus bhp and give you change from your budget.

And you look cool....iMO !

I feel similar to this with my 370Z and it makes a load of noise(modified exhaust/intake) but it doesn't actually go very fast! Exactly how I expect the Aston to feel. Unless a N/A engine has lots of torque(think Merc 6.2 V8) they always feel a bit disappointing in the performance stakes(I felt the same about my V8 M3 too).

Mad engine, check out the remap potential too.

Won't be many cars at that price point with similar figures (and that torque is lb/ft too not Nm)
