Inherited vehicles - what now?

I'm about to inherit two vehicles: a 1997 Mercedes CLK320 and a 2005 Aston Martin DB9 Volante. Both are currently out of MOT. My late father had recently renewed the VED and insurance for both.

Could someone please explain what I need to do to assume ownership and if the process differs according to whether I wish to keep the vehicles or sell them on. I'm thinking one less owner for the Volante would maintain value?

Give the insurance company a ring and explain your loss. They will put you on the policy for a month or so to enable moving them etc to get it all sorted. Cost me nothing but the phone call and made life a little easier .

Not sure about ownership, but with regard to registering yourself as the new keeper:

A guy gave me a car that belonged to his deceased mother.

You fill in the change of keeper part of the V5C as normal. I signed it and he signed it in place of his mum. Then when he sent the V5C off to the DVLA, he included a short covering letter explaining the circumstances.

I received the new V5C with no problems.

This was in accordance with advice we found online.

Thanks for the suggestions and apologies for the delay in responding. The plan is to keep the Mercedes, so I'll go ahead and transfer the V5C into my name and arrange a refund of VED to the executor(s). I can then tax/insure it and obtain a new MOT. As I already have a car, which I will continue to use in the meantime (the Mercedes is located 150 miles away), what is the best way of doing this?

For the DB9, things get a little more complicated. I am planning to sell the vehicle, so would rather not fork out a sizeable wedge for (very temporary) insurance, but I need it MOT'ing, so physically (and legally) need to get it to a testing station. Do I need to repeat the process for Mercedes and in doing so, add another registered keeper to a 23k mile specialist car, potentially reducing its value?

I'm planning to contact some relevant dealers, including the supplying dealer to guage value. Is it worth listing it on Pistonheads too? Of course, ultimately, I want to maximise value.

A decent garage will be willing to collect the car for the MOT and return it back to you afterwards, no need to insure it to take yourself.

As mentioned above, just contact the DVLA to explain the situation to them,and they'll sort out the V5C. I've done it before and it was a painless process.

Be very careful and act slowly as I've seen cars/number plates get lost within the paperwork; so whatever you do always keep the car/keys in your own garage off the road until all the paperwork goes through but as said above follow the government rules and everything should be good but did I mention keep the physical cars
