Reported for dangerous driving?

Hi,

On motorway at weekend - motorway was 4 lanes splitting into 2. I was in lane 3 (going right) and needed to be in either 1 or 2. I realised late but was blocked from changing by a row of cars sitting in lane 2. I sped up a bit but they were also creeping up. I couldn't slow as had someone right behind me.

So basically I've been daft - put foot down, got ahead of line of cars & made it into lane 2 just before junction. Close but I felt I was in control at all times.

About 20 mins later I pull into service station for a pee & car pulls up next to me. I get confronted by the other driver who is really quite upset & says they've reported me to the police as "I could have killed them". All I could really do at that stage was apologise - whilst being slightly freaked out about being followed.

What might happen here? Guy at work seems to think 0% of anything (no dashcam apparent etc). But I'm worried about it in all honesty - it would have looked great in fairness,

Ironically I'm booked on an advanced driving course week after next as I'm interested enough to do it.

I can't see that you've done anything illegal - just annoying to others. I wouldn't worry about it. Even if the other chap informed the police, they would probably tell him to do one. Even if they did come knocking, they would just have a few words and tell you not to do it again.

Thanks - as far as I'm aware, I cut it fine but was nowhere near the hatched area. It was the reaction of the other driver that is the worry. My wife was in car & she didn't especially react which made me fine at the time - I knew I'd definitely cut in but nowhere near as bad to elicit such a reaction. But it's clear that I've caused them distress & they've clearly gone & given the police both barrels.

I'm sure it looks poor on camera - would they bother to dig this out? No accident was caused.

Complete over reaction from the other driver ,which is fairly typical nowadays.

"Could have killed me"......you didn't even crash ,so death was a long way away.

The upset driver is clearly just giving you empty threats to make you feel small, in turn making them feel superior over you.

Even if they did have a dash cam, they’d be hard pressed to get any evidence of dangerous driving from it... on the basis that what you’ve told us is true.

If what you’ve told us is true, relax.

A couple of years ago in a Sainsburys car park, I was confronted by an angry "ex traffic policeman" who was going to report me for "driving recklessly" and doing "50 mph" along the access road to the car park; absolutely impossible due to a) the length of the road, b) the sleeping policeman c) the fact there were corners and d) I wasn't driving an F1 car.

I asked him how he knew I was doing 50, he just said as he was ex police "I know", I asked him if he was calibrated; he looked confused! I pointed to my car, told him there was the reg number, gave him my name and told him to get a life and I may have told him to fk off.

I'm still waiting to hear from the police.

I think OP meant that, had he been the one that had been cut up by somebody, he would have given the coffee beans and moved on.

Ignore it, there are some seriously angry people around.

I reversed in a petrol station the other day and someone knocked on my window to say I nearly ran them over, I wound down the window and said, "really sorry, I just did not see you, I was looking out for cars", he then went in to a rant about how I was parked and blocking space etc...I repeated my apology and he walked off up the road moaning....he wasn’t driving and I think he may have been a car hater due to the new petrol station near his house.

I felt bad for a while but it was poor visibility on my behalf, I apologised and it was a mistake.

The people in the petrol station said they did not think I was very near him.

Carry on with your life and worry about it if anything happens, likely won't of course. Plus if no dashcam just deny it, fk all the other chap can do with no witnesses.

We all make mistakes OP, it's happens and invariably it will irritate someone else. You will get the ones who give the coffee beans and get on with life. Those who will shrug their shoulders and a quick shake of head and you will get the ones you got who feel they need to follow you for X miles and have their say.

I wouldn't worry, chances are nothing will come of it. Might find yourself on YouTube if someone has a dashcam nearby but highly doubtful you will see the inside of a court for it.

Advanced Driving sounds like a good idea. One of the skills it will teach you is the ability to look well ahead and plan appropriately for any situations, should avoid this worry again.

No of course not. Let me be perfectly clear...

I apologised honestly to the other driver. But clear that they had very likely reported from their tone. They said their piece & stormed off.

What I meant by the wker comment was - had it been the other way round & I was cut up, even severely, I would have given the offender the wker sign. The police have enough to do as it is.
