I will be doing this trip maybe 2 or 3 times a year from next year onwards, I will be looking to get the most miles from a tank as possible with obviously the highest MPG that can be had.
My only requirements are that it is long enough to sleep in and that is costs <£3.5k.
I have picked out the obvious Passat bluemotion estate and also the peugot 508 sw (although these have a weird FAP system, ohh err missus) Both of these cars should be capable of 900 miles to a tank at sensible speeds I feel.
Does anyone have suggestions or do something similiar, let me know what car you have.

Aren't E Class estate about as big as it gets? You should easily be able to sleep in one of those.

They do look long enough to sleep in, not sure the MPG figures would be anwere near the passat though or the 508. Using the "extra urban" figure i work the passat out at being able to do 1114 miles to a tank.Quick look and 3,5K gets you something like this:

By contrast using the same "extra urban" figures the E280 would get 750 miles, a big difference when driving considering a car for multiple journeys

5ft 10ish, I think most estates would accomodate me height wise, another thing to consider is do all the rear seats fold completely flat. This info is a lot harder to find. Other than going to see a car and trying it.nobrakes said:

I had considered volvos too, although I'm not as clued on on which diesel engines are the best.
I have a Skoda Octavia 1.6 green line which was intentionally purchased for multiple trips to and from Cornwall. It's been pretty good on fuel, given I don't travel slow. Not sure the seats fold perfectly flat though to get a good sleep in it.
I'd beware anything that's had the emissions update from VW as it's bound to be problematic in your price range.

My Jetta 2.0 TDi BlueMotion Tech DSG gets about 60 mpg at 70 mph , 70+ mpg at sixty. (No, you can't sleep in it.) Jetta/Passat diesels are good motorway cruisers. Tank range is about 650-700 miles. Passat is heavier. Cruise control/auto helpful, as are auto-wipers.
I've done the Atlantic ports down to Alicante and Gib. half a dozen times. Everything starts going numb after three hours, so tend to stop for breaks. Gib to Bilbao is about ten hours plus breaks.
Santander to Alicante, seven and half hours plus breaks. I have done it in seven hours in a RAV4 diesel, at silly speeds. Boredom sets in, so there's a tendency to press on. :-)
Used to be that a lot of filling stations were closed for siesta/Sunday/ throwing goats off a church steeple festivals, so always took a couple of fuel cans and a funnel in the boot.
There was/is also a lot of distraction crime in autovia parking areas: 'helpful' eastern European people pointing out your newly deflated tyre then raiding the boot while you change it. Chum had his cameras and suitcase nicked when 'helpful' persons interrupted his nap on the autovia by knocking on the window.
Second trip, midnight somewhere at an autovia filling station, was approached by a tearful woman pleading for something - checked behind me and there were two guys emerging from the bushes. Drove off, pronto.
Also had a gun pointed at me in Alicante, (daytime, around 12:00) perp was being trailed by police, who jumped on him while I stood around, shaking. Wouldn't want to sleep in the car.
Thrilling times. :-)
Volvo 'D3' covers a range of 150 HP or so diesel engines with the same designation. The five-cylinder ones were pretty nice. An auto Volvo estate is worth looking at - they tend to be loaded with extras and have conservative owners.
Had a Merc E class estate: solid, but a bit of a barge. As with the Volvo, main dealer servcing prices were eye-watering.

I can quite comfortably do 5-6 hour stints in the UK before I need the toilet. Not sure where people get 2-3 hours from but I guess everyone's different.
The miles on a tank thing is more a convenience thing, also seeing which cars have the largest fuel tanks with the highest mpg has become an obsession 😂. I just like the idea of being able to plough on regardless if I need to.

Mondeo estates are massive too.
Something like THIS - 6 speed, cruise, A/Cand just over 1100 miles based off official figures.
I believe the 1.6 diesel comes from Peugeot but by this point in the production run should have had all issues sorted out. Also, not sure what the switch in fron of the cup holders in this particular one is for but should be plenty of them around to choose from and some are listed at close to double the mileage (and half the cost) so you pay your money and take your choices.

It comes from experience ... I have a fair bit. Can I do 5-6 hrs in one go? Yes. Do I want to? I drove to the Algarve last month (mainly due to the Pont Aven being out of action). A 27 hour journey. To do it in 3 stops based on 6 hrs at the wheel each time would be torture.
Even 6 hrs at 85mph is only 510 miles so my point is that the range is largely irrelevant to your scenario. Very useful for a sales rep doing repeated 200 mile days but for a long journey largely irrelevant.
If you want a Large range for the sake of it though thats your prerogative so fair play.
