I run an r129 as a daily, the oily bits are mostly the same. I've done 25k in 6 yrs. It took the first Yr to shake down properly. Suspension, brakes, rattles, elec gremlins, overheating, wiring harness, flex joints, etc. Loads of help and enthusiasm from the Benzworld forum. Now it's done its been fine, a 3.2 M104 with 5 speed box.
My son runs his W124 E220 Coupe as a daily. It has been well maintained mechanically and doesn't give him any issues.
He also uses it for a 100 mile run up and down the M1 with no problem so far apart from once, the indicator light was not on the car when he arrived at his destination. Common problem apparently

I’m just about to do exactly that. Had some spare cash post my last car swap and a very tidy W124 320 coupe 1996 came up near me. It is a 4 speed auto rather than the 5 with 108k miles but loads of history.
Never had a Merc so thought I’d give it a go. My commute is 35 mile of A and dual carriageway. Early thoughts are that it feels very solid, no rattles or squeaks. It is also very comfortable and a real cruiser, I have slowed down compared with my previous dd of a Alfa GT.
I guess I’ll get high 20’s fuel wise but then maintenance and depreciation should be minimal. And it is a pretty cool way to travel. I’d like to get some long trips done as I would expect that to be its forte.

I’ve just bought a 1988 230e...pick it up in a couple of weeks...I’ve started a thread in ‘Readers Cars’ ...it might take a while to generate a decent user review though... However I researched and researched w124’s and on the whole every review, user experience was very positive...
I think I may have to guard it carefully as I have heard they still remain enormously popular in Africa...

I drove a 300 TE as a daily for a couple of years, mainly short journeys but a few 200 mile round trips.
The most comfortable car I've ever owned and probably worth buying just to hear the doors thud as they close.
Even with finding a good Merc specialist it wasn't cheap to run and MOT time was always a challenge but when you're driving along with the feeling of invincibility that only a W124 can give you, looking through the 3 pointed star gunsight with a German shepherd as your rear gunner, well I'm not sure too many motoring experiences come close..

This is my '89 260E. It's only got 61000 miles and I love it. It's got FSH and every tax disc from day 1. I get about 33-35 on a run and about 24-25 combined. I bought it from a fellow PH'er and he bought it from one as well. I flew to Belfast from Newcastle and drove it home via the ferry to Newcastle and it has never missed a beat since. It's super comfy and turns heads wherever it goes. Parts are cheap and so is the insurance imo.
Unfortunately I'm reluctantly going to sell it as I need and estate due to another baby on the way very soon. I won't put the dog in the 124 and there's no room for luggage when she's in my wife's 2015 Volvo V40.
Be careful when you look at them. Make sure you do your homework and look for a nice genuine car (Like mine
