Mk5 golf 1.9 tdi long start
Discussion
Hi
Im currently searching for a mk5 golf 1.9 tdi for a cheap run about. I’ve seen loads that are in bad condition but I thought I’d found a good one. The only issue is it seems to take longer than usual to start ( about 5 seconds). I’ve only looked at the car while it’s warm so not sure what it’s like with a cold start. Should I avoid or could a issue like this have a cheapish fix which I could knock the buyer down on? The cars runs spot on and has no other obvious issues. 100000 miles 2005 plate .Thanks

My wife has a 1.9 TDI seat leon. When cold it would start really nicely but when warm it required more cranking. Online I found the issue was due to the ECU detecting the engine was warm so it sends less voltage than if it was cold. The weak starter didn’t have enough power to spin the flywheel fast enough to start straight away on this reduced signal.
In the end I changed the starter which fixed it. It was about £250-300 for the starter and 3/4 bolts from under the front bumper.
